The Outsider, based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, has become a popular new miniseries for HBO. And while Jason Bateman headed up the cast and was the main draw for the series (along with, of course, King’s reputation), the cast is full of bona fide star talent.

Bateman is, of course, a well-known actor from as early as the ’80s in series like Silver Spoons and The Hogan Family, right up to his impressive career today with series like Arrested Development and Ozark, and films like Horrible Bosses, Office Christmas Party, and Game Night. While you might recognize the cast beyond Bateman from other projects, you might not be able to place them. Here’s where you probably saw them before.

11 Yul Vazquez

While most recently, you will have seen Vazquez, who plays officer Yunis Sablo, in The Good Wife on CBS, where he played Christian, and as Detective Anthony Nikolich on HBO series Treme, he has actually appeared in more than 40 films throughout his lengthy career.

Some of the films he has appeared in are pretty iconic ones, including six movies that were nominated for Oscars like Captain Phillips, The A-Team, and American Gangsters. He was also in Bad Boys II and Runaway Bride. So really, there are numerous places you’ve seen him already and probably didn’t recognize him.

10 Ben Mendelsohn

There’s good reason you might not recognize Mendelsohn from one of his most recent projects: he played the fictional shapeshifting alien Skrull named Talos in Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far From Home, but was in total make-up.

Mendelsohn, who heads up the cast as Detective Ralph Anderson, was also in The Dark Knight Rises, Ready Player One, and was the villain Director Krennic in the Star Wars film Rogue One. On the small screen, you might also recognize him from Netflix series Bloodline, a role for which he won an Emmy.

9 Jeremy Bobb

Playing private investigator Alec Pelley, you might recognize Bobb from his recurring role on CBS drama Hostages or in The Knick for Cinemax TV. He was also in the 2014 crime drama film The Drop.

But perhaps his most recognizable role from current TV is in Netflix series Russian Doll. He has also had small parts on series like Blue Bloods, Boardwalk Empire, Gotham, Billions, Mr. Robot, and Jessica Jones; and appeared in three episodes of House of Cards as Nick Henslow.

8 Julianne Nicholson

Beautifully portraying Glory, the broken and ostracized widow of accused killer Terry Maitland (Bateman) on the series, you may recognize Nicholson from her time as NYPD detective Megan Wheeler on Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

She has also previously worked with HBO on a role in Boardwalk Empire and with Showtime in Masters of Sex. Other small and guest-starring roles include series like The Good Wife, ER, and The Others. She also had a major role in early ’00s series Ally McBeal as Jenny Shaw; she appeared in 13 episodes.

7 Mare Winningham

Winningham, who plays Ralph’s wife Jeannie, has one of those faces you know but can’t quite place. But she’s actually an accomplished actor who has been nominated for eight Emmys as well as an Oscar, the latter for her role in the 1995 film Georgia.

She has racked up a long resume of film and TV roles, dating all the way back to 1985’s St. Elmo’s Fire and most recently in four American Horror Story seasons, Coven, Freak Show, Hotel, and Cult. She has also appeared on and off-Broadway.

6 Marc Menchaca

Jack Hoskins is one of the primary antagonists of the series, a troubled, alcoholic cop who has caught the attention of a malevolent being. Menchaca has one of those faces and personas that’s just made for playing a villain, so it’s no surprise he’s appeared in similarly sinister roles.

On Ozark, for example, he played a redneck man struggling with his sexuality. And on Manifest, which is currently airing its second season, he played James Griffin, a murderous thief who miraculously rises from the dead after a car crash.

5 Cynthia Erivo

One of the “it” girls of 2020, Erivo got noticed for her leading role as Harriet Tubman in the biopic Harriet, for which she earned an Academy Award nomination. She also starred as Celie in the Broadway revival of The Color Purple and appeared in the 2018 film Bad Times at the El Royale.

In this series, she wears a long, dreaded wig which is why you might not even have recognized her. She fantastically plays Holly, an eccentric, savant private investigator with a special knack for her job that makes her an asset to the team.

4 Derek Cicil

Most known for his role as Seth Grayson on Netflix series House of Cards, Cecil plays Andy Katcavage, a mall security cop and former detective who takes a liking to, and has a romantic interest in, Holly as well as proves crucial to helping the police investigation.

Aside from House of Cards, Cecil also starred in the short-lived series Push, Nevada and has appeared in the series Pasadena. But chances are you most recognize him as the stone-faced director of communications and press secretary for President Frank Underwood on HoC.

3 Bill Camp

As a well-known character actor, Camp often plays supporting roles on both television and film, including Lincoln, 12 Years a Slave, Molly’s Game, Vice, and Joker. In Joker, he played Detective Garrity, who came to talk with Arthur Fleck as a follow-up to a murder investigation.

For his role on the miniseries The Night Of, Camp received an Emmy nomination. If you’re into Broadway, you might also recognize him from the 2016 revival of The Crucible, which earned him a Tony nomination. In The Outsider, Camp plays Howard Salomon, Glory’s lawyer who is working with the detectives to try and clear Terry’s name while also protecting Glory’s interests.

2 Paddy Considine

As Claude Bolton, the slimy strip club manager and potential next victim of El Cuco, Considine might look familiar from supporting roles in a long list of films, including The Bourne Ultimatum, Macbeth, Honour, and The Death of Stalin.

Called “the best-kept secret in British movies” by The Observer, most of Considine’s acting has indeed been on British series and movies. You might also recognize him from music videos like Coldplay‘s “God Put a Smile Upon Your Face” and Arctic Monkeys’ “Leave Before the Lights Come On,” both of which he also directed.

1 Hettienne Park

Playing Jack’s detective partner Tamika Collins, who has just gone on maternity leave and notices something off with her friend, you might recognize Park from her role as Beverly in the TV series Hannibal.

If you don’t know her face from that series, however, you might recognize her voice from the Rockstar video game The Warriors as well as the narrator of the documentary Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary. She has also had minor roles in series like The BlacklistBlindspot, The OA, Damages, and Law & Order, among many others.
