The Grand Theft Auto franchise includes tons of nostalgic references and Easter eggs, but perhaps the coolest one is the underwater hatch that serves as a reference to the TV show Lost. The critically-acclaimed TV showed aired from 2004 to 2010, and even though it was already off the air for almost three years when GTA 5 originally released, Lost continues to be a cult classic to this day. So, it’s no surprise Grand Theft Auto, long-known for satire, chose this iconic show to pay tribute to.

The GTA Easter egg has important differences from the actual hatch that can be found in Lost. In the TV show, the characters stumble upon a hatch that leads them to an underground station, but it has nothing to do with the ocean or being underwater since they find the hatch in the jungle. In Grand Theft Auto 5, however, the hatch is found on the seafloor and actually can’t be opened by players. But the physical similarities between the two hatches make it pretty clear this is a GTA-Lost crossover.

The Lost reference in GTA is a rewarding Easter egg to find, regardless if players are fans of the show or not, considering how tough it can be to locate. However, once they do find it, they would be wise to not get as close to the Grand Theft Auto 5 version of Lost‘s hatch as characters in the television show do.

GTA 5’s Underwater Lost Hatch Explained

Finding the underwater hatch is simple. What isn’t so easy, however, is attempting to open it. Players can find the Lost reference by swimming off the coast of San Andreas, as far out as possible roughly horizontal with the quarry on the eastern side of the map. Players will know they’ve located the hatch when they stumble across a circular, metal contraption embedded in the sea floor. Upon swimming closer to the mechanism, a light will begin flowing on the small window located at its front.

However, it will prove futile if the player attempts to open the hatch. Since Grand Theft Auto 5’s Lost reference is located almost directly on the game’s kill zone, it allows the player little time to interact with the hatch. The pressure from the water will instantly ruin the player’s submarine or their scuba diving equipment. Attempting to use the invincibility cheat (or another sort of cheat) will also lead to the same results.

Players can still interact with the hatch, however. Upon moving closer towards it, Grand Theft Auto 5 players will be able to hear a barely audible tapping noise. According to the GTAForums fan site, the tapping sensation is Tap Code (which shares similarities to Morse Code). When translated, the phrase says “Hey, you never call, how’d you fancy going bowling?” which is a tribute to Grand Theft Auto 4 character Roman Bellic, who is constantly looking for someone to hang out with. Who knows, maybe someone got tired of Roman constantly asking to go bowling and decided to trap him behind the hatch.

This Lost reference is one of Grand Theft Auto 5’s best-kept Easter eggs, and while it may be tough to get to, it’s definitely one players should put on their gaming bucket list.
