The first two episodes of WandaVisionintroduced fans to Agnes (Kathryn Hahn), the titular characters’ nosy neighbor, and her mysterious husband Ralph. Agnes is quick to welcome Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) to the neighborhood and be of any assistance with regards to cooking dinner and helping her gain favor with the other citizens of Westview, the town Wanda and Vision (Paul Bettany) have made their home. Agnes talks a lot about Ralph, but he’s nowhere to be found. It’s possible that Agnes’ missing husband is WandaVision’s biggest clue that all is not right in Wanda’s world.

Agnes always has a joke up her sleeve and most of them are at the expense of Ralph, the elusive husband who is oft-mentioned yet never seen. If Agnes didn’t bring him up, the audience would never know he even existed. So, where is Ralph? Is he even a real person? WandaVision toys a lot with the fact that everyone in town, including Agnes, Geraldine (Teyonah Parris), and Herb are actual people who may have had lives outside of Westview. However, the town is small and Ralph’s absence suggests that something is not only very wrong, but that Agnes could be behind whatever’s happening with Wanda.

Agnes serves as basically Wanda’s guide to Westview. In fact, it seems that Agnes knows a bit too much about everyone and everything that goes on in town — from explaining to Wanda that pleasing the neighborhood’s strict Dottie Jones (Emma Caulfield) is in her best interests to appearing right after Wanda finds a colorful toy helicopter in her bushes. Agnes seems unbothered by Wanda and Vision’s somewhat awkward behavior and secrets and almost seems to relish in it. However, the fact that Ralph hasn’t dropped in on any of the neighborhood’s community events or for dinner at the main couple’s residence is pretty fishy. Why does Agnes insist on bringing up Ralph if he’s never going to be around?

What’s more, fans have speculated that Agnes could be short for Agatha. In Marvel comics, Agatha Harkness is an ancient and very powerful witch who has been portrayed as Wanda’s mentor and a nefarious villain. There have certainly been clues that Agnes is, in fact, Agatha on the show. In the WandaVision trailer, Agnes is wearing a witch costume for Halloween, complete with long grayish hair, pointy black hat, and a cape. She’s also sporting a mysterious black and white brooch that looks eerily similar to the one Agatha wears in the comics. It’s unclear what her plans might be, but the clues of Agnes being an antagonist are pointing in that direction for now.

If Agnes is indeed a witch, then it makes sense that she’s behind whatever’s going on in Westview. Ralph’s non-existence might be a ruse Agnes implemented to blend in with others and make conversation. Maybe she felt she had to reference a husband to complain about and bond with Wanda. At the end of WandaVision’s first episode, the implication is that someone is watching and potentially controlling what goes on in Westview and Agnes could very well be behind it all. She may be friendly with Wanda for now, but Agnes could be planning something huge for the titular pair. Ralph could show up eventually, but for now, his absence merely makes Agnes a suspect.
