Where Is Schitt’s Creek Located?

Schitt’s Creek is a Canadian sitcom, but where exactly is the town located? The show was created by father-son duo Eugene and Daniel Levy, who also star in the series. Schitt’s Creek is set to air their sixth and final season in 2020.

The series follows the Rose family – Johnny (Eugene Levy), Moira (Catherine O’Hara), David (Daniel Levy), and Alexis (Annie Murphy) – whose wealthy lifestyles are upended when they are forced to move to the town of Schitt’s Creek after their video store empire falls into fraud. Since Schitt’s Creek premiered in 2015, many viewers have wondered where the series is set. There has been no indication within the town as to whether it’s located in the United States or Canada, and the dialogue never mentions the location of the Rose family.

Eugene Levy has stated that the ambiguity of Schitt’s Creek‘s location is on purpose. They want the viewers to decide where the show should be located. Knowing the exact location might come with preconceived notions so they decided to keep it unclear to add to the mystique. Daniel Levy, however, has confirmed that the series has a more specific setting. He spoke about the matter in an interview with Buzzfeed News:

“For us, it was always important to create a sense of isolation, and pinning the location down wasn’t ever part of the narrative of the show. So it does exist in this sort of isolated bubble. [But] we are a Canadian show, so inherently it is a Canadian town. We’ve never spoken about it, so I don’t like to necessarily pinpoint it anywhere. But for the sake of the hard copy, I guess it’s set in Canada.”

It makes perfect sense to assume the location of Schitt’s Creek would be in Canada. The series is filmed in Goodwood, Ontario and the Greater Toronto area. Its original network is CBC Television and airs in the United States a day later on Pop. The main cast, aside from Chris Elliot, are all Canadian natives so it was special for them to develop the series in their home country.

Even though the location of Schitt’s Creek is never directly stated in the series, the past lives of the Rose family have pointed to a few locations. It was revealed that the Rose family once had a home in New York. David, and particularly Alexis, have also revealed their globe-trotting tendencies. That freedom to live frivolously is obviously gone, as they are still currently stuck living in the local motel – which Johnny Rose now manages.

The small town charm has grown on the Rose family as each member continues to embrace their new lifestyle. They no longer look down on their fellow Schitt’s Creek citizens quite as much as they used to, and have made some life-long friends and (in David and Alexis’ case) romantic connections. The Rose family is still rebuilding their lives as a way to get back on their feet. With those challenges come new adventures, which often results with great hilarity for viewers. Who knew living in Schitt’s Creek could be so appealing?
