This article contains spoilers for Eternals.

Kingo surprisingly sat out the final battle in Eternals, and audiences are likely wondering where he was during the finale. The Eternals arrived on Earth some 7,000 years ago, charged with protecting humanity from the threat of the Deviants. They became the basis for countless myths, legends, and religions, viewed by early humans as gods who fought on their side against forces that threatened to wipe out their race. In short, the Eternals shaped human history, with Phastos in particular responsible for many acts of scientific advancement. The Eternals ultimately separated, absorbed into modern civilization and Kingo, in particular, saw entertainment as an opportunity, reinventing himself as a Bollywood performer.

Eternals saw these ancient aliens learn their true mission. They were not humanity’s heroes at all; rather, they were simply protecting humanity for a time so enough life force could build up on Earth to nourish a Celestial whose seed lay deep within the planet’s core. Far from benevolent gods, the Celestials were alpha predators who fed off this life energy, and whose birth destroyed the worlds they hatched from. The revelation shook the Eternals to their core. Some chose to oppose the Celestials and find a way to save humanity, while Ikaris and Sprite decided to fight against their family to fulfill their mission on behalf of the Celestials. Marketing for Eternals had deliberately concealed the identity of the film’s villains, preparing for Eternals‘ shocking villain twist in which the Celestials and two Eternals were themselves the ones who threatened the planet.

Kingo found himself in an impossible position. He had enjoyed interacting with humans, and he was unwilling to participate in destroying the Earth. But, at the same time, he was shaken when Ikaris chose to side with the Celestials. Kingo had always had unshakeable faith in Ikaris as the Eternals’ leader; his latest Bollywood movie was even a loving tribute to his fellow Eternal. Kingo ultimately decided to sit out the final battle as a pacifist, unwilling to pick a side and harm any other members of his family. And so Kingo, the Bollywood performer who had played so many heroes, abandoned the Earth to its fate.

There is a tragic irony to Kingo’s story. So many of his Bollywood performances seem to have been attempts to imagine himself as the greatest hero, the one around whom the story pivots. When the call to adventure finally came, however, he was unwilling to make a decision. Being a leader often requires making excruciatingly difficult choices; in the end, he wasn’t up for it. Kingo was caught in a no-win situation. He truly believed that the Celestials destroying a few worlds every so often was the lesser evil than those worlds and life never being created at all. Yet, he also refused to raise a hand against his beloved family. In the end, Kingo chose to remove himself from the final battle, which, in its own way, was maybe the hardest decision of all.

Even more shockingly, Kingo hadn’t even given any thought to how he would leave the Earth after the finale. The Eternals took the Domo with them when they headed to the point of Emergence, and then a few departed Earth in it after the final battle. That meant he had no way to leave the planet when the Celestial Tiamut emerged from the core. Kingo wasn’t even willing to act to save his own life – which, depending on how one looks at it, can be seen as either an act of cowardice or of finding ultimate peace and acceptance of one’s fate.
