Here’s where Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda are during Star Wars: The Bad Batch. The characters are two of the most well-known and popular in the Star Wars franchise, appearing across various mediums over the years. Of course, Obi-Wan and Yoda factored heavily into the Star Wars movies, but they’ve also been featured in a number of novels, comics, and animated TV shows. The two were principal players in The Clone Wars and were also included in Star Wars Rebels.

Lucasfilm has returned to the animation realm with new series The Bad Batch on Disney+. As the title suggests, the show follows the exploits of the titular Clone Force 99, after they debuted in The Clone Wars season 7. While the series is focusing primarily on characters that originated in the previous animated show, The Bad Batch also features returning Star Wars characters from live-action projects, like Tarkin and Fennec Shand. Two franchise icons who probably won’t be appearing are Obi-Wan and Yoda, and there’s a good reason why.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Bad Batch’s place in the Star Wars timeline sets the show in the immediate aftermath of Revenge of the Sith, dealing with the fallout of Palpatine forming the Galactic Empire. That means it takes place beginning in 19 BBY, the outset of Obi-Wan and Yoda’s exiles on Tatooine and Dagobah, respectively. Obi-Wan stayed on the desert planet to watch over a young Luke Skywalker, while Yoda bided his time in the swamp before agreeing to train the boy.

Obi-Wan and Yoda both seemingly managed to avoid Imperial detection during their exiles (Tarkin is even surprised Obi-Wan is even alive in A New Hope), so it’s highly unlikely the two will be featured in any capacity in The Bad Batch (save for the news reel intro in the series premiere). There isn’t an organic place in the narrative for Obi-Wan and Yoda since they’re in hiding. This isn’t to say the two Jedi will definitely never appear in The Bad Batch, it would just be a very difficult sell and have to truly be earned. With everything else The Bad Batch has on its plate, trying to shoehorn in a pair of exiled Jedi arguably wouldn’t be the best decision.

Of course, audiences haven’t seen the last of Obi-Wan. Ewan McGregor is returning to star in the live-action Obi-Wan Kenobi series for Disney+, which will chronicle Kenobi’s exile on Tatooine. That show will have an Imperial presence as Hayden Christensen is co-starring as Darth Vader, so it’ll be interesting to see how the Obi-Wan story unfolds. As for Yoda, his past is being detailed in the High Republic publishing materials, but there’s no official word on an onscreen return. Perhaps Yoda could factor into the High Republic TV show The Acolyte, but he’ll probably be absent from The Bad Batch.
