The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 6 had Bucky Barnes, John Walker, and the MCU’s new Captain America, Sam Wilson, take a last stand against the Flag-Smashers in New York — so why wasn’t Spider-Man present during the fight? Spider-Man’s first fight scene in the MCU was against Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes in the airport battle of Captain America: Civil War. From there, Spider-Man went on to fight the Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home, while Sam and Bucky finally got their own adventure in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Sam and Bucky’s Disney+ show took them to various locations around the world such as Tunisia, Lousiana, Baltimore, Berlin, Latvia, and Madripoor. The season finale took place in New York — a place that is particularly known for its high concentration of superheroes in both Marvel Comics and the MCU. Some of the most notable New York residents include Doctor Strange, Moon Knight, the Defenders, the Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man. While it’s unknown whether Moon Knight and the Fantastic Four already inhabit the city in the MCU, the absence of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man in the Falcon and the Winter Soldier finale is definitely out of character for the wall-crawler.

As with many details in the MCU, Spidey’s absence can be easily explained. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier takes place six months after the events of Avengers: Endgame, while the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home begin during the summer of 2024 (eight months after Tony Stark’s death). Taking the MCU timeline and the approximate duration of the plot of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier into account, it’s safe to say that the Flag-Smashers’ attack on the GRC in New York probably overlapped with Peter Parker’s trip to Venice. So, at this point, Spider-Man could have fought the Flag-Smashers as a beloved hero instead of the public menace the world considers him after Spider-Man: Far From Home, but he just wasn’t available.

This would also explain why the tribute to the Avengers that opens Spider-Man: Far From Home features Sam Wilson as Falcon instead of Captain America. The careful placement of the MCU’s Phase 4 titles on the timeline helps each story avoid spoiling other major events and allows Marvel Studios to focus on each character without the need for gratuitous MCU cameos. Although Spider-Man: Far From Home was released in 2019, many of the important events that must have happened between Avengers: Endgame and Spidey’s international adventure will probably be touched upon in upcoming movies and shows.

With the Avengers no longer having their headquarters in the Avengers Tower and Doctor Strange directing all his attention on mystic threats, Spider-Man’s absence in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 6 is the biggest question mark of the show regarding MCU cameos. The next similar question the MCU must answer is where all the active Avengers are during the large-scale events of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Secret Invasion.
