The Caves and Cliffs update is making some major changes to Minecraft, including a new block that will take the place of Stone and Cobblestone inside the expanded depth of the world. One of the biggest changes the update is making to Minecraft is increasing the maximum height and depth of worlds. This not only allows players to build higher and dig deeper than ever before but also introduces Grimstone which is a new form of Stone that players can craft into all sorts of things.

Before Minecraft 1.17 also known as the Caves and Cliffs update, players could dig down in the overworld as low as Y-level 0. After the update, players will be able to dig all the way an extra 60 levels to Y-level -60. Here players will find a bunch of new additions to Minecraft including copper ore, cave generations, and threatening mobs. This guide will inform players of where they can find Grimstone and what they will be able to do with it.

Where Grimstone Is Located In Minecraft

Grimstone is a new darker version of Minecraft’s iconic stone block, and it can only be found in the deepest regions of the overworld. Grimstone begins to spawn at Y-level -1 and is mixed in with stone until about Y-level -7. From Y-level -8 onwards, Stone will no longer generate and will be completely replaced with Grimstone. Diorite and Granite will no longer generate past this point as well, but players can still find pockets of Andesite. Ore will also spawn past this point, but its grey stone texture will be replaced with the new Grimstone texture. Grimstone takes longer to mine than Stone without any enchantments but takes the same amount of time to mine if the player has the Efficiency V enchantment.

Grimstone is very easy to come by, and it has a ton of uses. Like Blackstone that was introduced in Minecraft’s Nether update, Grimstone can take the place of stone in crafting recipes. It can also be used to make slabs and stairs and can be smelted or used on a stonecutter to make polished variants. This makes Grimstones one of the new best blocks to build with because of its darker color, pattern, and versatility. Grimstone may take longer to reach because of how deep underground it lies, but it is worth the trip to collect.
