Minecraft is getting some new aquatic creatures as a part of the 1.17 update, and this guide will help players locate them and explain what they are for. The new mob is known as the Axolotl which is based on the real-world amphibian closely related to the salamander. The Minecraft Axolotl belongs to the neutral mob category meaning they will not attack players on sight but will defend themselves if provoked.

These new mobs will be added during the Caves and Cliffs update, but players won’t have to scour their worlds too much in order to find one of them. In fact, Axolotls are relatively easy to locate, but they may not be worth the minimal efforts as they don’t drop any items when killed. However, these tiny amphibians are ferocious and can help players when in a pinch. Here is where they can be found and how players can use them.

Where and What are the Minecraft Axolotl

Until the Minecraft 1.17 update goes live, players won’t be able to find Axolotl in the wild. However, they can be spawned in Creative Mode by using spawn eggs. When 1.17 does drop, players will be able to find Axolotls in River biomes and the brand new Lush Caves. This is one of the new cave formations that will be introduced with the update. As amphibians, players will only be able to find them in bodies of water. In order to tame these Axolotls, players will need to catch them in buckets like they do different kinds of fish. These Axolotl are then tamed like when players feed wolves bones or stray cats fish.

Axolotl can be found in five different colors including pink, cyan, brown, gold, and an extremely rare blue variant. While they may not be worth farming, players may want to start an Axolotl farm to hunt the blue variant. Axolotls are effective in helping the player in aquatic combat. They can fight drowned, guardians, and elder guardians, and can also help players hunt squid and fish. Players can usher around an army of Axolotl making it much easier to infiltrate underwater temples. However, they are easily distracted by fish making the player have to keep a close eye on them. Axolotl will also play dead when attacked which will cause hostile mobs to ignore them while they gain back health.

Minecraft is available on PC, Android, iOS, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
