Here’s where to spot Jon Snow’s prop rubber sword during a major sequence on Game On Thrones season 6. Back when the first novel in George R.R. Martin’s epic A Song Of Fire And Ice saga was published in 1996, it was hard to imagine it would receive a faithful adaptation on TV. The size and scope of its world combined with its sprawling cast of characters made any adaptation a daunting task, but HBO rose to that challenge with their Game Of Thrones series, which debuted in 2011.

Game Of Thrones quickly grew to become one of the most popular TV shows of all time, and in addition to great characters and performances, it featured lots of shocking twists and impressive battles sequences. Unfortunately, the pace of the show saw it overtake Martin’s books, with the final three seasons comprised largely of original material. The critical and fan reception to these final seasons suggests this wasn’t for the best, and the show felt like it raced towards the end and took sloppy narrative shortcuts that ended up hurting the story.

Regardless of lingering disappointment over how it ended, the legacy of Game Of Thrones in pop culture is assured at this point. Game Of Thrones season 6 was the first to start using new material outside of George R.R. Martin’s novels, with the major battle sequence being the “Battle Of The Bastards” in episode 9. This saw the Stark and Bolton forces clash over control of Winterfell, which ended with the defeat of Ramsay Bolton and his army. During one key moment of this battle, it’s possible to see that Jon Snow’s sword Longclaw is clearly made of rubber.

Before the armies clash outside Winterfell, Ramsay releases Jon and Sansa’s younger brother Rickon and forces him to run across the battlefield while firing arrows at him. Jon races to rescue his brother, but in the shot of him running and claiming onto his horse, his sword Longclaw can be seen wobbling and bending, meaning it’s a rubber sword prop. Of course, in the excitement of Game Of Thrones season 6’s most intense battle, it’s easy to miss and this was obviously done to make it safer and easier for Kit Harrington to jump on his horse. That said, once the rubber sword is spotted it’s hard to miss, and needless to say, it was quickly immortalized in gif form.

Jon Snow’s sword had an arc of its own on Game Of Thrones, with the sword being a gift from his Night’s Watch commander Jeor Mormont. It was with Jon for several key moments, including the revelation the Valyrian steel sword is capable of taking down a White Walker in battle. That’s why it’s kind of funny to see the mythical blade briefly turn into a rubber sword, though luckily for Jon, it returned to its regular state when he needed Longclaw the most.
