Eddie Murphy first rose to fame thanks to his stand up and time as a cast member on Saturday Night Live. He was essentially launched to movie stardom with his very first film 48 Hrs in 1982, a buddy comedy pairing him with Nick Nolte. He cemented his stardom with the twin classics of Trading Places in 1983 and Beverly Hills Cop in 1984.

At the height of Eddie Murphy’s stardom, Paramount offered him a big cheque to appear in reshoots for their Dudley Moore comedy Best Defense, which suffered horrible test screenings; his cameo was billed as “Strategic Guest Star” on the poster. It was rough being a fan of Eddie Murphy around the 2000s, as he appeared in a string of misfires like sci-fi comedy The Adventures Of Plato Nash, Norbit and Meet Dave. Regardless of a few duds, he’s still a major comedy and movie icon, and he was honored in Spike TV’s special Eddie Murphy: One Night Only in 2012. Unfortunately this special is a little tricky to find online and isn’t currently available from platforms like Netflix, Hulu or Prime.

Eddie Murphy: One Night Only isn’t available to rent or purchase from services like Google Play or Vudu either, and it appears the only current option to view it online is to buy it from the PlayStation Store for $7.99. This special saw the star being honored by fellow actors and comedians such as Chris Rock, Jamie Foxx, Adam Sandler, his brother Charlie Murphy and Tracy Morgan – who donned Murphy’s infamous red leather suit from stand up special Delirious. The special paid loving tribute to the star, though while it drew record ratings for Spike TV when it aired, some viewers were disappointed Murphy himself didn’t perform any material.

Still, Eddie Murphy: One Night Onlyis worth seeking out for diehard fans. Murphy has been on something of a major comeback in recent years, winning praise for his lead turn in Netflix’s Dolemite Is My Name and his 2019 comeback as host of SNL, which marked his first time hosting in over 30 years. His upcoming projects include Coming 2 America and he’s set to reprise the role of Axel Foley for Beverly Hills Cop 4.
