Where can The Wizard Of Oz be found online, and is it available on Netflix, Hulu or Prime? The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz by L. Frank Baum was published in 1900, and the book kicked off a series of fantasy novels. The story sees young Kansas girl Dorothy taken away to the Land of Oz, where she encounters any number of strange characters and creatures. The book had actually been adapted several times prior to the iconic 1939 movie, but this version is easily the most well-known.

This Wizard Of Oz cast Judy Garland as Dorothy and it suffered through something of a troubled production, which includes up to five different directors working on it. Nevertheless, its use of music, technicolor imagery and charming characters made it an instant classic and it’s now considered one of the best movies of all time. It received a sequel – of sorts – with 1985’s Return To Oz, which cast Fairuza Balk as Dorothy. This belated follow-up is considerably darker and more disturbing than the 1939 version, including an infamous sequence set in a room filled with screaming, severed heads. The movie was a box-office failure upon release but has since found a cult following.

While it’s unlikely a straight Wizard Of Oz remake will ever happen – some films just can’t be improved upon – other adaptations of the books just keep coming. Recent examples include NBC’s Emerald City, which starred Adria Arjona and Oliver Jackson-Cohen, but while it received good reviews for its production design many found its writing lacking; it was cancelled after one season.

There was also an attempt to kick off a new The Wizard Of Oz film series with Sam Raimi’s Oz The Great And Powerful in 2013. This was an origin story for the titular wizard and the Wicked Witch of the West, but despite being a success a sequel didn’t happen. For a time, there were also plans for Todd MacFarlane to adapt his Twisted Land Of Oz toy series into a movie version, with Dakota Fanning being lined up to play Dorothy around 2007. Talk of this project soon went quiet, however, and is now unlikely to happen.
