The Demon Slayer(or Kimetsu No Yaiba) universe is full of incredibly powerful characters. Following the story of Kamado Tannjiro, a boy who decides to slay demons after they kill his family and transform his sister into a demon, the popular manga series soon introduced readers to the powerful Slayers of the Demon Slayer Corps as well as some insanely tough demons.

While fans inevitably have their favorites out of this extensive lineup, here are our picks for the most powerful Demon Slayer characters.

Tanjiro Kamado

Manga series protagonist Tanjiro Kamado is easily a powerful Demon Slayer. Where other Slayers have mastered a single fighting style, Tanjiro actually utilizes two – the Water Breathing Style and later the Dance of the Fire God. Tanjiro’s Dance of the Fire God is a breathing technique unique to the Kamado family, giving him an extra edge in battle.

What’s truly unique about Tanjiro, however, is his compassion. Having a sister who was turned into a Demon, he doesn’t hold an all-consuming prejudice against Demons. That said, he doesn’t hesitate to battle and kill them if necessary either. The line he walks isn’t an easy one, but Tanjiro somehow manages.

Mitsuri Kanroji

Appearances can be deceiving, and that’s certainly the truth in this case. Mitsuri Kanroji may appear to be a fragile looking thin girl, but she actually has eight times the muscle density of an ordinary human woman. This makes her an incredibly strong combatant that demons underestimate at their peril. Beyond that, Mitsuri uses the Breath of Love technique when she fights which, coupled with her strength and whip-like sword, make her impossibly fast as well.

Kyoiuro Rengoku

Strength is not always measured just in the power one has to destroy. Sometimes, strength is also determined by one’s versatility and ability to protect as well as punish. Both of these attributes are true of Kyojuro Rengoku who uses the Breath of Flame technique while battling demons – literally issuing a sea of flames against demonic opponents. However, it’s not just his offensive technique that’s impressive – he also protected all the passengers of a train while battling demons. Now that’s heroism!

Sanemi Shinazugawa

If experience equates power, then Sanemi Shinazugawa may outclass almost all the other characters. This Demon Slayer’s entire body is covered with scars after years of slaying demons. These marks, coupled with his truly powerful Breath of Wind style, are impressive enough to make the demons themselves respect (or possibly even fear) Sanemi’s strength.

Gyomei Himejima

Japanese mythology has frequently celebrated the battle prowess of blind warriors who gained a greater mastery of their skills while compensating for a perceived handicap. This definitely applies to Gyomei Himejima, the Stone Pillar of the Demon Slayer Corps, who uses the Breath of Stone style to wield his deadly strong-hand axe. Not only are his physical skills impressive, Gynomei’s hearing has grown so acute that he can use the slightest sounds to direct him in combat.

Multiple members of the Corps, as well as the demon Kokushibo himself, consider Gyomei the most powerful Demon Slayer, which is saying something. Despite his power, however, Gyomei is also very gentle and pious, showing that power does not always reside in inherently destructive people.

Kokushibou

Obviously, the Demon Slayer Corps doesn’t hold all the power in the world of Kimetsu No Yaiba – the demons they battle are also immensely powerful (sometimes to frightening degrees). Falling into this category is Kokushibou, the most powerful of the Twelve Kizuki. Even before becoming a demon, he was a skilled and cunning swordsman. Moreover, after battling for hundreds of years, he amassed a great deal of knowledge about fighting technique – particularly when battling Demon Slayers.

Part of the reason why Kokushibou was so powerful was that he sought greater and greater strength all of his existence. Ultimately, this ambition won him tremendous power but took him far away from his original dream of becoming a noble samurai. It just goes to show that a single-minded quest can cause you to sometimes forget what you truly desire.

Muzan Kibutsuji

Kokushibou may have been considered an extremely powerful demon, but even he couldn’t measure up to the power held by Muzan Kibutsuji, the original Demon and main antagonist of Demon Slayer. Guilty of committing multiple atrocities, not the least of which was killing Tanjiro Kamado’s family and turning his sister into a Demon, Muzan doesn’t seem like a particularly powerful being at first glance. He’s been known to take on the guise of a sickly child as a cover identity, hiding his true strength.

As the first Demon, Muzan has tremendous physical strength and can regenerate from any battle damage almost instantly. His narcissism and overconfidence have frequently caused him to compare himself to a force of nature, which may be an exaggeration, but those who get in his way may have a different opinion.

Doma

While some Demons appear to have retained some semblance of emotion or even a slight sense of moral scruples, this cannot be said for Doma, a sadistic Upper Two Demon. Despite taking on horrific damage during his existence (including getting his whole jaw blasted off) Doma didn’t develop any empathy and actually enjoyed inflicting tremendous pain onto others during the Demon Slayer saga. His sadism causes him to go to outrageous lengths when it comes to inflicting pain, making him one Demon everyone needs to watch out for.

Nezuko Kamado

While both Kokushibou and Muzan Kibutsuji are unbelievably powerful Demons when it comes to sheer physical strength and fighting ability, power can come in different forms – even among Demons. Nezuko Kamado was transformed into a demon by Muzan Kibutsuji and yet still retained some of her capacity for human emotion and loyalty. Although her Demon form gives her great power, Nezuko refuses to use her strength to harm humans and continues to display loyalty toward her brother and her friends. It takes a special kind of strength to resist a demon transformation, and Nezuko Kamado deserves to be acknowledged for the strength of her will.
