Encanto is sure to be seen as one of the best movies to have emerged from the Disney studios in quite some time. Though it has many of the hallmarks of classic Disney–with its vibrant animation, sweeping musical numbers, and fascinating characters–its story also goes a great way to subverting some of the expectations that audiences have.

There’s no question, though, that a major part of its appeal stems from its characters and their personalities, and so it is worth considering how they look through the lens provided by the Chinese zodiac.

Rat – Mirabel

As the hero of this story, Mirabel is one of Encanto‘s most likable and fascinating characters. She is exuberant and outspoken and smart, and she knows her own value as a person.

What’s more, she also shows that she is very persuasive when it comes to it, and thus she is able to show her family, especially Abuela, that she has something to bring to the family. These are all traits that closely align her with the rat.

Ox – Abuela

There are few signs in the Chinese zodiac that are as dependable and conservative as the ox. Those in this sign don’t particularly like change, and though they can be patient, they are also stubborn.

These are all traits that Abuela shows in abundance, for while she is very committed to her family and to their safety, she also can be very recalcitrant when it comes to changing anything about the way that the Madrigals have always done things.

Tiger – Pepa

Pepa is one of the more mercurial members of the Madrigal family, and she has a tendency to let her emotions get the better of her. This can cause quite a few problems, especially considering that her magical power is the ability to control the weather.

She shows many of the signs that are associated with the tiger, particularly in the emotional intensity that she often displays when faced with any kind of a problem.

Rabbit – Julieta

Though Mirabel has a somewhat vexed relationship with some members of her family, there’s no question that she is close to her mother. In fact, Julieta deserves a lot of credit for always being warm and compassionate, both toward her daughter and toward the other members of her family (making her one of the best Disney parents).

Given that her nurturing personality is one of the key aspects of her character, it’s not surprising that she would be associated with the rabbit.

Dragon – Antonio

As one of the younger members of the Madrigal family, Antonio tends to look up to Mirabel, and he remains one of her closest relationships. At the same time, he also shows that he has many of the personality traits associated with the dragon, particularly since that sign is known for being very warm-hearted and charismatic.

It’s probably for this very reason that he is gifted with the ability to speak to animals.

Snake – Bruno

Bruno is, of course, one of the best characters in the movie, and he is the subject of one of Encanto‘s best songs. However, he is also something of an outcast, and it’s rather sad to see the way that they turn their back on him.

He shows many of the personality traits associated with the snake, especially since he has an unusual combination of being both very smart and very introverted, a blending of characteristics that helps to explain so many of his personality quirks.

Horse – Isabela

There’s no question that Isabela is the type of character that would appear in a traditional princess movie. She is the type of person that is very aware of her own beauty and perfection, though she also knows that it’s something of a burden.

She shows repeatedly that she has many of the personality traits of the horse, particularly given how impatient she is with anything that stands in the way of what she wants to do, including and especially Mirabel.

Sheep – Agustín

Given that Agustín married into the Madrigal family, he seems to occupy a rather liminal status, as both an insider and something of an outsider. However, he still shows that he has a lot of compassion and dependability, particularly when it comes to his wife and daughter.

He is, moreover, a very shy and mild-mannered sort of person, aligning him with the sheep.

Monkey – Camilo

Given that he is still a teenager, it’s not entirely surprising that Camilo would still be trying to figure out who he is and what he wants out of life. This can most clearly be seen in his ability to shape-shift (which he does quite a lot).

However, he is also a very fun and active sort of person, someone who brightens up a room simply by being in it, which closely aligns him with the zodiac sign of the monkey.

Rooster – Dolores

Like the other members of her family, Dolores has a gift that can sometimes be a curse, in that she has the ability to hear almost anything that happens, whether that’s in the house or outside of it. While this gives her a valuable perspective on what everyone is doing, it can also be overwhelming.

She shows that she also has many of the personality types associated with the rooster, since she almost always knows what is going on, both behind closed doors and in front of them.

Dog – Luisa

Luisa is one of the strongest characters in Encanto, and not just because of her physical strength. She is the kind of person that everyone in the family and in the village knows that they can rely on.

She also bears a heavy burden as a result, and there are times when she takes her duties too seriously. At the same time, these are precisely the traits that allow her to fit into the personality type associated with the dog, which tend to be people that are both diligent and kind.

Pig – Félix

All of the Madrigal daughters managed to marry someone that brought a measure of balance to their lives, and Pepa is no exception.

From the moment that he appears, Félix makes it clear that, unlike his wife, he is a bit more measured in his responses, and he is very tolerant of the eccentricities of the rest of his family. These are personality traits that are most commonly associated with the pig.
