Several characters from the Fast & Furious franchise return for F9, and here are the movies each of them previously appeared in. The Fast Saga has become one of the biggest movie franchises in Hollywood. With a focus on family, the continued success of the Fast & Furious movies has allowed Universal’s franchise to bring back various characters with each installment. The series has a main cast of characters, but much like the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s connectivity, the Fast & Furious movies often bring back any individual who can fit in the specific story.

Directed by Justin Lin, F9 takes place years after The Fate of the Furious. The story begins with Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez) living out in the country to raise Dom’s son Brian. They are roped back into their former lifestyles when Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) disappears and Dom’s secret brother Jakob (John Cena) is responsible. Dom and his usual crew reteam to take down Jakob and save the world from Project Ares. This results in Dom calling in favors from friends he’s met all across the Fast & Furious franchise and even includes the series’ long-awaited trip to space.

F9 marks the second film in the main franchise without Brian O’Connor following Paul Walker’s tragic passing during Furious 7‘s production. Dominic Toretto has been with the franchise since The Fast and the Furious in 2001. He then appeared in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift for a cameo at the very end. After this appearance, Vin Diesel has been back for every subsequent sequel in a starring role. This includes Fast & FuriousFast FiveFast & Furious 6, Furious 7, and The Fate of the Furious. His return in F9 marks his eighth appearance in the Fast & Furious franchise overall.

Letty Ortiz

Michelle Rodriguez has played Letty Ortiz ever since The Fast and the Furious. She didn’t return until Fast & Furious in 2009, where Letty was killed early on. Rodriguez then came back in Fast & Furious 6 in which Letty was revealed to be alive but suffering amnesia. She appeared in Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious prior to her latest role in F9, which is her sixth movie in the franchise overall.

For his appearance in F9, Mr. Nobody doesn’t interact with any other characters, as he goes missing and sends the team on their mission.

Sean Boswell

Lucas Black joined the Fast & Furious franchise during The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, where he played the lead role of Sean Boswell. After feeling like a standalone appearance, Sean Boswell made a cameo in Furious 7 as the film explored Han’s death. He now makes his third appearance in the franchise with F9.
