A Los Angeles-based law firm has calculated which Final Destination deaths are most likely to happen in real life. The Final Destination franchise has enjoyed a long run, with the first movie releasing in 2000 and the most recent film, Final Destination 5, coming out in 2011. None of the movies in the franchise have gotten glowing praise from critics, but each film has turned a significant profit for New Line Cinema and Warner Bros.

The Final Destination series is known for gruesome deaths. Each film has essentially the same plot; the main character has a premonition and manages to save several people from a terrible accident before Death comes back to pick them off. The franchise managed to keep bringing audiences back to theaters by making the deaths crazier and usually more unrealistic for 11 years. Some deaths are as simple as Terry getting hit by a bus in Final Destination, while others are much more elaborate, like Olivia, who is burned in the face by a laser before twisting her ankle on a teddy bear’s eye and falling out of a window.

While some of Final Destination‘s accidents seem pretty unlikely, Downtown LA Law claims that some happen fairly often. The firm analyzed 300,000 ER visits to calculate which accidents from the five Final Destination films are most common. According to their study, ladders were the most common cause of injury, with the law firm finding 4,162 ladder-related injuries were reported in the US since 2019. Tanning bed burns, in reference to Ashley and Ashlyn’s death in Final Destination 3, are much less frequent, with only one case being reported in the US.   4. Scolded with oil – 335. Final Destination 5 – oil truck spill.
  5. Lawn Mower accidents – 229. The Final Destination – rock shot through eye socket by a lawnmower.
  6. Escalator malfunctions/trips – 211. The Final Destination – caught in escalator gears.
  7. Shot with a nail gun –  160. Final Destination 3 – shot by a nail gun.
  8. Roller coasters accidents – 14. Final Destination 3 – roller coaster crash.
  9. Barbecue burns – 10. Final Destination 2 – barbecue explosion.
  10. Tanning bed burns – 1. Final Destination 3 – tanning bed set on fire.

  8. Drowning/water-related – 189 real-life injuries. 2 Final Destination deaths.

The last Final Destination installment came out 11 years ago, yet the franchise isn’t dead just yet. It was reported in 2019 that Final Destination 6 was in development, but like so many other projects, work on the film was paused due to the pandemic. The latest update came in January 2022, when Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts was announced to be producing Final Destination 6. Not much is known about the newest movie, but it is expected to go straight to HBO Max whenever it releases. Early reports indicated the film would be a soft reboot focusing on first responders avoiding death. However, it’s unknown if that is still what Warner Bros. is planning.

There is still clear interest in the Final Destination series, given the development of the sixth film and this recent study from Downtown LA Law. It’s too early to tell if Final Destination 6 will be a successful venture, but the deaths from Final Destination are no doubt still on horror fans’ minds. Just last year, Final Destination started trending after a log crashed through a driver’s windshield, which was very reminiscent of Kimberly’s pileup premonition in Final Destination 2. Everybody of course hopes to avoid accidents like those seen in the Final Destination movies, but it’s interesting to see just how common some of the injuries really are. After all, accidents do happen.
