The Outsiders from Francis Ford Coppola follows the main character, Ponyboy Curtis, as he grows up with his older brothers and found family in a tight-knit group referred to as the Greasers. The Greasers have a natural rival in the Socs and the two often fight verbally and physically.

The coming-of-age story introduces several characters on both sides who have distinct personalities and particular strengths and weaknesses. Each Zodiac sign has certain typical personality traits attributed to each sign. Here are the main characters from The Outsiders sorted into their corresponding Zodiac signs.

12 Aries: Sodapop Curtis

Sodapop (Rob Lowe) is a lively and outgoing character who everyone, both Greasers and Socs, loves. He’s a courageous, optimistic, and honest character who has a strong relationship with both of his brothers. He can be a little moody at times when he becomes overly stressed, but overall he has a sunny demeanor. All of Soda’s strengths and weaknesses are similar to the Aries sign.

11 Taurus: Cherry Valance

Cherry is a Soc who doesn’t buy into the division of the Socs and Greasers, especially after she meets and befriends Ponyboy and Johnny, and wants to help them even though she has conflicting feelings after Johnny kills her boyfriend Bob. She is a reliable, stable, and practical character who would rather see people as individuals instead of part of one particular group. She’s stubborn and isn’t afraid to stand up for herself, and her character traits make her similar to the Taurus sign.

10 Gemini: Randy Adderson

After his best friend Bob’s death, Randy starts to reevaluate his life and the Soc vs Greaser battle he’s stuck in and how meaningless it is. Randy is similar to the Gemini sign because he turns out to be pretty gentle and affectionate by reconciling with Ponyboy and saying he was sad to hear about Johnny’s death even though he killed his best friend. Randy quickly learns from his mistakes and adapts to his new outlook on life by not showing up to the final rumble between the groups.

9 Cancer: Ponyboy Curtis

Ponyboy is a loyal, emotional, and highly imaginative character at the center of this story. He doesn’t hold in his emotions when he fights with his older brother Darry, but it’s clear that he still loves and is loyal to both his brothers and his Greasers found family.

He can be moody, insecure, and highly anxious at times but he is quickly put under a huge amount of stress when he and Johnny have to go on the run after Johnny kills Bob the Soc to protect Ponyboy. All of Ponyboy’s strengths and weaknesses are similar to the Cancer sign’s personality traits.

8 Leo: Marcia

Marcia has a small part in the story, but her personality is similar to the Leo sign. Marcia is Cherry’s good friend who finds Dally annoying but amusing and befriends Ponyboy, Two-Bit, and Johnny as well. She is stubborn and a little arrogant as an upper-class Soc, but she does like talking to Two-Bit and loosens up once Dally leaves. She’s pretty warm-hearted and cheerful once she feels more comfortable with the more tame Greasers.

7 Virgo: Darrel Curtis

The eldest Curtis brother, Darry (Patrick Swayze), is the most responsible and tends to focus on his work and keeping his two younger brothers safe as their father figure. He is a local and hardworking character who worries about Ponyboy’s future and safety because he wants to provide a better life to his youngest brother. Darry’s personality is similar to the typical Virgo personality.

6 Libra: Bob Sheldon

Bob isn’t in the story very often and his defining moment is trying to drown Ponyboy and being killed by Johnny in self-defense. Although he doesn’t have much screentime, his girlfriend Cherry and best friend Randy genuinely care about him. Bob is similar to the Libra sign because he tends to hold a grudge and seemed to have a lot of self-pity that caused him to lash out.

5 Scorpio: Dallas Winston

Dallas (Matt Dillon) is a resourceful, brave, and passionate character who is a true friend to all of his found family in the Greasers group. He immediately drops everything to help Ponyboy and Johnny go on the run and refuses to tell anyone, even Ponyboy’s brothers, where they’ve gone so he only implicates himself as an accomplice. Dally can also become violent and distrusting at times toward anyone who isn’t part of his inner circle. All of Dally’s strengths and weaknesses are similar to the Scorpio sign’s personality traits.

4 Sagittarius: Two-Bit Matthews

Two-Bit has a great sense of humor and is clearly the most humorous Greaser within the story. All the Greasers appreciate his care-free attitude, support, and generosity even though he has so little to share. Although the Greasers like his sense of humor, it can sometimes be offputting to others outside of the group since he tends to not filter what he says. Two-Bit has a similar personality to the usual personality of the Sagittarius sign.

3 Capricorn: Steve Randle

Steve Randle (Tom Cruise) is Sodapop’s best friend and fellow Greaser. He has a decent amount of self-control especially when compared to more rambunctious Greasers like Dally and he’s very supportive of Sodapop even though he can give Ponyboy a hard time. Although Steve only has a small part in the film, his personality is similar to the Capricorn sign.

2 Aquarius: Tim Shepard

Tim Shepard runs a separate Greaser group that teams up with the main Greaser group for the rumble against the Socs at the end of the story. He’s an independent person who leads the group and seems to be aloof and unemotional.

His aloof approach, even though he does care about his group, is heightened in comparison to the main Greaser group and the strong emotions shown within their found family. Tim’s strengths and weaknesses are similar to the Aquarius sign.

1 Pisces: Johnny Cade

Johnny Cade (Ralph Macchio) is a quiet, nervous, gentle, and compassionate character who was viciously beaten by a group of Socs and has an abusive home life. He cares deeply for his found Greaser family and would do anything for them, including killing Bob to protect Ponyboy. He’s even more shaken and fearful when they go on the run and has a strong desire to escape his own personal reality making him similar to the Pisces sign.
