James Cameron’s Titanic (1997) was easily the biggest hit for that year (and the following decade), and still remains one of the most popular blockbusters of all time. It catapulted Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet to international stardom, cementing the bedrock for their iconic future.

The lush cinematics aside, Titanic is a period piece, and therefore includes pretty much everyone who was actually present on the ship when it went down in 1912 — and several fictional characters were also added to produce an interesting storyline. Here is a list of the most important characters in the film and how they fit into the traits of the Zodiac signs.

12 Aries – Molly Brown

Molly is the sweet lady in first-class who takes Jack under her wing (he reminds her of her own son.) She is a classic Aries, given that she has a strong personality, for instance when she demands that her lifeboat go back and save more people (which the real-life version of her character also did.)

Molly knows how to take charge of the situation, even though she usually does this by making her stiff upper lip cohorts anxious and embarrassed when listening to her bawdy stories.

11 Taurus – Rose DeWitt Bukater

Rose is a firebrand, but she does need a little spark to get her going. Being a Taurus, she is a sensible, yet kind, person — she rejects her mother’s behavior towards “lower class” people, intentionally hanging out with Jack and his friends in the third-class deck.

Rose stubbornness is her defining trait, for example, when she refuses to leave the sinking ship, taking a dangerous risk by literally jumping off her lifeboat back on to the Titanic (to be with Jack.)

10 Gemini – Brock Lovett

Brock Lovett is the man responsible for the whole story, as the oceanic “treasure hunter” who roams the seas for sunken ships to find. The Gemini in him allows him to be flexible in terms of expectations, as his job doesn’t quite have a high level of success.

This nature is the reason he isn’t left completely bereft at the end of the film, as locating the Heart of the Ocean takes a backseat to listening to Rose’s captivating and heartfelt tale of love and loss. Further, the fact that he takes on such complex challenges only serves to prove his intelligence.

9 Cancer – Fabrizio De Rossi

As a Cancer, Jack’s friend, Fabrizio de Rossi is an incredibly imaginative person, regardless of his potential to fulfill his dreams. When they win Titanic tickets in a card game against three Swedish men, he is so excited that he yells out with joy.

Fabrizio is clearly loyal towards his best buddy, as seen when he and a couple of other men help Jack destroy a locked grille (meant to keep the steerage folk down while the wealthier ones get to the lifeboats.)

8 Leo – Edward John Smith

Edward John Smith is the captain of the unsinkable Titanic, and the Leo bursts out of him in the form of pride and self-assurance. This turns out to be a folly, as his confidence in his majestic vessel is shattered along with the Titanic’s hull.

Nevertheless, Smith shows unmistakable signs of being a true leader, like when he denies a life-jacket offered to him and decides to absolve himself by going down with the ship.

7 Virgo – Ruth DeWitt Bukater

The Virgo is said to be as cool as a cucumber, even when weighed down by intense pressure. This can be observed in Rose’s mother, Ruth Bukater, in how well she maintains the atmosphere of solemnity around her person.

She greatly desires that her daughter’s life be as perfect (read: super privileged) as hers was, but she unjustly makes that decision for her by having her “betrothed” to Caledon Hockley.

6 Libra – John Jacob Astor IV

John Jacob Astor IV was the richest man on the Titanic; but, in Libra style, he remains (mostly) unbiased towards the people that his peers rarely even look at — on one occasion, he pleasantly greets Molly Brown, a rich person but with allegedly “unrefined” tastes.

Astor’s commitment is a rare sight in the film, as he loses his life while going on a hunt for his missing dog. Instead of being terrified, however, he stands firm and proud by the grand staircase before an onrush of water sweeps him away.

5 Scorpio – Caledon Hockley

Caledon Hockley finds the disaster taking place around him of negligible interest; he would rather chase after a woman he doesn’t actually care about (and vice-versa.) His narcissism is almost beyond measure, as he believes that offering a regal gemstone will net him the romance of his dreams.

These Scorpio traits of negativity teem within Cal, which is depicted in his overly competitive attitude towards Jack, and the manner in which he tries to bully Rose into going along with his whims.

4 Sagittarius – Lizzy Calvert

Lizzy is a typical Sagittarius, right from her blunt honesty (when she disallows anyone but herself from touching her grandmother’s wheelchair) to her playful sense of adventure (shown in her interactions with Brock Lovett, especially the borderline flirting relationship they seem to develop.)

The fact that Lizzy takes care of the elderly Rose while living together with her, is just more evidence of her dedication towards her grandma, illustrating the effort she is capable of while caring for someone who needs her.

3 Capricorn – Ida & Isidor Strauss

Ida Straus and her husband, Isidor, appear in one of the most well-known scenes in the entire movie: that of an old couple cuddling each other on a bed while their cabin fills with water. Both of them are Capricorns, which isn’t surprising since their final act exhibits their genuine compassion for their respective spouses.

Interestingly, survivors of the disaster have claimed that the pair did die together, but while sitting on the deck, hands clasped, as they are taken by the ocean.

2 Aquarius – Rose Dawson Calvert

In direct opposition to her young counterpart, Rose Dawson is not as feisty as she is too old to care about appearances. Being an Aquarius, she radiates an aura of mystery to the point that her audience is rapt with attention for the whole duration of her story.

The teenage Rose Bukater held on to the idea of Jack for way too long, even taking on his surname after being rescued. Age has brought wisdom, and with it, the strength to finally “let go” of her past, when she tosses the Heart of the Ocean into the murky depths where it has always belonged.

1 Pisces – Jack Dawson

Only the artistic Pisces has the ability to create magic out of nothing, like how Jack initiates a whirlwind romance aboard the largest ship in the world, armed with nothing but charm and gorgeous hair.

His sketching talents aside, he is an undoubtedly selfless person, always trying to save other people irrespective of the danger to his own life, an example being his (failed) attempt at saving a little child from drowning in the flooded lower levels of the ship. Jack’s love for Rose is limitless, considering how he manages to keep her safe until the very end.
