In the 35 years of The Legend of Zelda, Link has explored many atmospheric and intimidating dungeons. Though Breath of the Wild scrapped many series conventions, including traditional temples, the elaborate dungeons of previous games remain core to the Zelda franchise’s identity. Fans often wonder which of these areas is the best or most iconic, but which Zelda dungeon has actually been the most dangerous challenge to overcome?

Aside from Breath of the WildZelda games mostly allow Link to reach new temples and dungeons sequentially. As players build Link’s inventory of items and skills, more places open up for them to explore. Link will never actually enter a dungeon without being equipped for its challenges. While they may prove difficult – and, at times, frustrating – in terms of problem solving, navigation, and enemy encounters, they are still entirely doable for the Hylian hero.

But what if, instead of The Legend of Zelda’s leading man, it was a real person who had to tackle the many perplexing puzzles and unearthly creatures found within, all without the aid of magical tunics and potions? This would bring a whole other element to the dangers faced in these closed-off and otherworldly areas – especially in those elemental temples, such as Ocarina’s Fire Temple, where the human body would be unable to endure for any significant period of time, let alone fight tooth and nail against their nimble and cunning foes.

Ocarina’s Fire Temple Is A Huge Health Hazard & Zelda’s Most Dangerous Dungeon

The Fire Temple in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time would immediately prove to be a massive problem for a mere mortal. Even if they were able to somehow survive just standing inside an active volcano, the very air in this temple would result in the body immediately trying to cool itself by producing copious amounts of sweat. This, in turn, would severely dehydrate the person unfortunate enough to find themselves in such a volatile environment, and, given the immense heat present in the Fire Temple, a clean source of refreshing drinking water would be impossible to find. When a person gets too dehydrated, they also run the risk of developing kidney stones, which can be incredibly painful and potentially turn deadly, should an infection develop.

To make matters even more hazardous, if this person does somehow manage to make it through the temple’s many twists and turns without bursting into flames, suffering a cardiac arrest due to smoke inhalation, or drying up into a crispy, heat stroke-ridden husk, they will come face to face with a whopping dragon at the end. Needless to say, that is one battle best left to the Hero of Time. Maybe attempting one of The Legend of Zelda’s water temples with some scuba gear and a harpoon would be more prudent – although this would still be highly unadvisable.
