Here’s everything you need to know about The White Princess follow-up series The Spanish Princess. Following the success of 2013 BBC historical series The White Queen, which told the story of Elizabeth Woodville, played by Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Fallout), it was expected the show would return for a second season. However, the BBC ultimately opted not to commission one, which led to the Starz network developing a sequel series called The White Princess on their own.

Like The White Queen, The White Princess was based on a novel by renowned author Philippa Gregory and told the story of Elizabeth of York’s marriage to Henry VII. The White Princess was both a critical and ratings success for Starz, but instead of commissioning The White Princess season 2, the next series will instead adapt Gregory’s novels The Constant Princess and The King’s Curse.

What Is The Spanish Princess About?

While it won’t be called The White Princess season 2, The Spanish Princess will be a continuation of the events shown in the previous series. The miniseries tells the story of Catherine Of Aragon (Charlotte Hope), the Princess of Spain who arrives in London after being promised the throne.

When her husband Prince Arthur dies, she claims their marriage wasn’t consummated and then sets about pursuing Arthur’s brother, who would be remembered by history as Henry VIII. Their eventual divorce when she was unable to provide Henry with a male heir to the throne led to the English Reformation.

The Spanish Princess Trailer

The Spanish Princess trailer arrived in March and shows Catherine Of Aragon’s arrival in London and her determination to become Queen following the death of Prince Arthur. Like The White Princess and The White Queen before it, the new series promises to be a lavish historical production with a great cast and a similar mix of intrigue, romance, and bloodshed.

When Will The Spanish Princess Air?

The Spanish Princess will premiere May 5 on Starz. Given the acclaim that’s greeted previous adaptations of Philippa Gregory’s novels, The Spanish Princess will likely be another ratings success for Starz. While nothing is confirmed, there are many other books in Gregory’s The Plantagenet and Tudor series, so there’s scope for future adaptations of her work like The Boleyn Inheritance.

Gregory’s novel The Other Boleyn Girl was previously adapted into a movie in 2008, starring Natalie Portman, Eric Bana and Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Endgame). This novel told the story of a love triangle between Henry VIII and the Boleyn sisters Mary and Anne, who later became Henry’s second wife. It’s unknown if The Spanish Princess will touch on this part of history.
