Recent trailers and behind-the-scenes looks at Horizon Forbidden West revealed a surprising addition to the game’s cast: Carrie-Anne Moss. Although there are plenty of returning characters in Horizon Forbidden West, Aloy is poised make plenty of new acquaintances. Moss’ character is among the game’s fresh faces, but she doesn’t appear to be a typical, tribal denizen of the eponymous region.

Carrie-Anne Moss is most famous for her portrayal of Trinity in The Matrix films, which just recently released its fourth entry after a protracted hiatus. Other notable roles include Memento‘s Natalie, and Jeri Hogarth in multiple Netflix series part the Marvel Cinematic Universe, most prominently Jessica Jones. Moss’ tenure in video games began in 2003’s Enter the Matrix, and continued in the latter two Mass Effect games, where she voiced Aria T’Loak, crime boss of Omega. She recently reprised her role as Trinity in an Unreal Engine 5 tech demo called The Matrix Awakens, which made a very good argument for the need of a new AAA Matrix game.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In Horizon Forbidden West, Moss will play an enigmatic character named Tilda. She was first teased at the very tail end of Forbidden West‘s most recent story trailer, in which she had no lines. The day after that trailer dropped, Moss was featured in a behind-the-scenes video highlighting some of the game’s cast. Uploaded to YouTube by the official PlayStation channel, Moss discusses her portrayal of Tilda, but remained noticeably vague on the character’s details.

Who Horizon Forbidden West’s Tilda Might Be

In the Horizon Forbidden West story trailer, which is also on PlayStation’s YouTube, Tilda doesn’t have a single voice line. Her only screen time comes at the very end, when she turns toward the camera before a cut to black reveals the words “rise above our ruin.” Since Forbidden West is one of many February 2022 video game releases, it seems unlikely that Tilda will be elaborated on in any more promotional spots, instead being saved as a part of the game’s grand narrative. Her futuristic garb suggests she has some connection to the Old Ones, the term Horizon uses for 21st century humans.

Lines from GAIA overlaying Tilda’s appearance imply she’s a character that can’t be entirely trusted. This is corroborated through Carrie-Anne Moss’ words in her behind-the-scenes interview, where she mentions Tilda being “manipulative” and “dynamic.” Moss also made a conscious effort to avoid giving away too much, but an additional quote from the PlayStation UK Twitter account revealed that her character is molded by a tragic childhood, which evolved into profound sadness and loneliness in adulthood. With the way Carrie-Anne Moss’ character has been merely teased, Tilda seems likely to play a major role in the narrative of Horizon Forbidden West, and appears poised to be a part of the game’s major revelations.
