Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Book of Boba Fett episode 1

A mysterious mayor is teased during The Book of Boba Fett episode 1, but who could the powerful potential threat to Boba Fett be? The first episode of The Mandalorian spinoff show laid the groundwork for how Boba Fett plans to take over Jabba the Hutt’s criminal empire on Tatooine. This included meeting various people in power and them paying Boba for protection moving forward. However, The Book of Boba Fett also teased a mayor who could cause some trouble for the famous bounty hunter.

During the beginning of The Book of Boba Fett episode 1, Boba Fett sits on Jabba’s former throne to accept tributes and expects to see the mayor of Mos Espa. They are instead met by the Mayor’s Majordomo, who is an unnamed Twi’lek. The Majordomo tells Boba Fett and Fennec Shand that he does not have a tribute for the power-hungry bounty hunters and instead asks if they have a tribute for the Mayor. This is a clear sign that Mos Espa’s mayor views themselves as the rightful heir to Jabba’s empire and won’t so easily let Boba swoop in and take control. So who is The Book of Boba Fett‘s Mayor character?

It might go unnoticed by some viewers, but The Book of Boba Fett presents a telling sign of who the Mayor is. When Fennec Shand believes the Majordomo to be the Mayor, she introduces him as “His Excellency, Mok Shaiz, Mayor of Mos Espa and its surrounding plateaus.” There is no character known as Mok Shaiz in Star Wars‘ expansive canon, but this individual is the mayor. i09 confirmed with Lucasfilm that Mok Shaiz is the name of Mos Espa’s mayor, although it is not confirmed whether or not that is the name of a new character or a title taken by someone familiar in the galaxy far, far away.

Since Mok Shaiz is not a known name in the franchise, the most likely answer to The Book of Boba Fett‘s secret villain is it will be a new character. The possibilities at that point are limitless, as Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Robert Rodriguez could’ve created any type of character to be Boba Fett’s new foil. It is possible The Book of Boba Fett‘s trailers already revealed the Mayor, though, as Mok Shaiz’ Majordomo is seen alongside an Ithorian sitting on a throne. This alien could be Mos Espa’s mayor then, which while potentially disappointing to viewers, is a fairly realistic option.

If Mok Shaiz does turn out to be a title or new name of a previously established character, then The Book of Boba Fett could get a bit crazier with its Mayor reveal. There has been a lot of speculation about Qi’ra and Crimson Dawn playing a role, so there’s a chance Mok Shaiz is a title she’s taken to rule Mos Espa. Other candidates to have a new name as part of their rise to power could range from Cad Bane to Bossk. This type of reveal would certainly be more exciting for viewers if The Book of Boba Fett managed to pull it off, but the Mayor should properly appear before too long.
