Warning: Contains spoilers for Ted Lasso season 2, episode 6.

Sam Obisanya has become a more central character in Ted Lasso season 2, as well as a fan favorite, but who plays the Nigerian footballer? Sam had some strong moments in season 1, but he was more of a side character during the show’s early episodes. More recently, however, Sam has been at the center of some major storylines, including AFC Richmond’s protest against former sponsor Dubai Air in Ted Lasso season 2 and his anonymous dating app flirtations with club owner Rebecca Welton.

Given recent reveals, Sam may become even more important in the latter half of Ted Lasso season 2. The twist that he’s actually the man chatting with Rebecca on Bantr could have huge repercussions for the upcoming episodes, as both characters may be quite taken aback to discover each other’s identity. Plus, Sam has firmly established himself as one of the star players of AFC Richmond, and he seems to be becoming one of the primary faces of the club.

All in all, Sam is easily one of the most likable characters in all of Ted Lasso, which is an impressive feat unto itself. That’s largely due to the phenomenal performance by actor Toheeb Jimoh, who brings the character to life. Outside of Ted Lasso, Jimoh is best known for playing Marcus in the Amazon original series The Feed and for playing the lead character of Anthony Walker in the Peacock original film Anthony. In addition, Jimoh is slated to play Tunde in The Power, another Amazon original series currently in post-production.

Given how relatively recently Jimoh entered the major film/TV scene, it’s impressive to see how many prominent roles he’s already scored. Of course, going off of his Ted Lasso performance as Sam, they’re all clearly well earned. The young star is immensely talented, and it’s exciting to see him getting more opportunities, both from his expanded role in Ted Lasso season 2 and in his various other projects.

It should be especially interesting to see how Ted Lasso’s Sam and Rebecca app twist ends up impacting Jimoh’s character. Taking further steps in his (currently anonymous) relationship with Rebecca could end up being great for both of them, or it could spark scandal and complications in the locker room. Sam’s a kindhearted person with a warm and encouraging outlook on life, which could be exactly what Rebecca needs. But it remains to be seen if a continued relationship between the two will manifest in Ted Lasso season 2.
