WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Mandalorian.

The Mandalorian season 1 finale helmed by Taika Waititi and titled “Redemption” gave us more information about the show’s mysterious primary protagonist. Here’s everything you need to know about who plays the skilled bounty hunter and what he actually looks like under his helmet.

Created by Jon Favreau, the first live-action Star Wars series takes place five years after the events of Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi. It’s the inaugural show for Disney+ and focuses on Din Djarin, a skilled bounty hunter who likes to work alone. Mando’s latest mission is to retrieve a mysterious asset which happens to be a Force-sensitive 50-year-old infant from the same species as Jedi Master Yoda.

Unable to trust the Imperial remnants who called the job, Din opted to keep Baby Yoda, setting off a series of events that led to a face-off between him and Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) – a former Imperial governor who ordered the hunt and the primary antagonist of the series.

Pedro Pascal Plays The Mandalorian

The Mandalorian‘s Din Djarin is played by Pedro Pascal. Fans know him best for his roles in Game of Thrones, Narcos, and Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Next year, he’ll join the DCEU as Maxwell Lord in Wonder Woman 1984. Pascal was cast as the project’s title character in November 2018 – a year after Favreau was confirmed to create the show. His casting was in conjunction with the confirmation that Gina Carano (Cara Dune) and Nick Nolte (Kuiil) were also boarding the series. Pascal follows the footsteps of Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron) and Diego Luna (Cassian Andor) as the third Latino actor to play notable Star Wars character.

What The Mandalorian Looks Like Under The Mask

While Din Djarin kept his helmet on throughout almost the entirety of the The Mandalorian season 1 – it was removed in the final episode. There were a couple of instances that the Mandalorian was almost unmasked, including when Omera (Julia Jones) attempted to remove it when the bounty hunter and Baby Yoda made a pit stop at Sorgan. But at every turn, Din was able to keep his mask on, adhering to the Mandalorian’s code that their armors are like their second skin.

After suffering a fatal wound on the head, Din thought that it was his end. He told Cara to go and keep Baby Yoda safe from Moff Gideon’s troops. IG-11 (Waititi) stayed with him, and as a nursing droid said that Mando needs to remove his helmet so it could heal him. Din initially refused, insisting nobody should see his face. The droid argued that it’s technically not a living being which finally convinced the Mandalorian to do as he’s asked. Upon removing his helmet, we learn that Din is a normal-looking human male. No scarring on his face whatsoever, although blood was dripping from injury he recently suffered.

Pedro Pascal Isn’t The Only Actor To Play The Mandalorian

While Pascal is credited as Din Djarin in The Mandalorian, he’s not the only one who plays the character. When the actor can’t be on set due to other commitments, his stunt doubles Brendan Wayne and Lateef Crowder take over the armor – Pascal provides the voice over for every episode, however. Bryce Dallas Howard who made her directing debut in the show’s fourth episode titled “Sanctuary” famously said that she wasn’t even able to work with Pascal.

Wayne is confirmed to return for the series’ season 2, which means that the established will somehow carry over to the new season. This set-up, however, is not new in Star Wars – while James Earl Jones provided the voice for Darth Vader, David Prowse is the physical embodiment of the iconic villain. Even Favreau’s cameo as Paz Vizla had the same scheme as real-life MMA fighter and John Wick villain Tait Fletcher who put on the suit.

It’s curious if we’ll see more of Din without the helmet in The Mandalorian season 2 which is already in production. But his unmasking in the season finale sets a precedent for the show’s future.
