Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Apple TV+’s Finch!

Apple TV+’s movie Finch features a loveable new robot for audiences to enjoy, but who voices Jeff the Robot? Starring alongside the legendary Tom Hanks is no small feat for anyone, but being the sole support for the star through voice-acting alone seems nearly an impossible task. Fortunately, Jeff’s actor was well suited for this role, and his performance lifts up this post-apocalyptic tale.

In Finch, a robotics engineer named Finch Weinberg, played by Hanks, survives in a superheated wasteland version of Earth with his beloved dog. As Finch suffers from an unknown ailment, he creates a robotic caretaker for his dog, naming his intended replacement Jeff. While he implants as much textbook knowledge into Jeff as he can, a life-threatening storm forces Finch to relocate his makeshift family away. In their escape, Jeff grows past their initial naiveté and becomes a hero, saving both Finch and his dog, eventually finding home and safety in San Francisco.

Jeff is a gentle yet capable robot, so it is fitting that its actor is the subtly talented Caleb Landry Jones. Jones has been featured in a great variety of recent films, especially with breakout roles in X-Men: First Class and Nitram. His starring performance in Nitram earned him the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival. However, Jones is probably most widely known for his role in the critically-acclaimed horror movie Get Out, in which he played the character, Jeremy Armitage. Jones shines as a dramatic actor, equally able to support as well as star.

The chemistry between Jones and Hanks is critical to the success of Finch. The characters Finch and Jeff have what becomes a father-son dynamic over the course of the film, and Hanks and Jones are able to capture the emotions of this experience perfectly. This is made more impressive by the nature of the film; Hanks’ live-action Finch acts alongside Jones’ CGI Jeff. While Hanks is no stranger to being the sole actor in a movie, as per his landmark performance in Castaway, Jones’ ability to play off Hanks builds the film to new heights. As Finch fades away, Jeff becomes more human, exhibited through the loss of the robotic tinge to Jones’ voice. By the end of the film, Jones absolutely succeeds in his portrayal of what amounts to a child growing up and accepting their purpose.

There is a lot to be said for the dystopian adventure of Finch, but Jones’ performance is a true highlight. His ability to bring emotion and vibrancy to a role, so inherently robotic, enhances the film and exhibits his talent. With another great performance under his belt, it’s safe to say that actor Caleb Landry Jones is on the road to stardom.
