Who was crowned the winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 9? Reality television became increasingly popular following the success of shows like Big Brother, Survivor, and American Idol. RuPaul’s Drag Race arrived on Logo back in 2009 and proved to be an instant hit with viewers. Prior to the show, RuPaul had appeared as a guest judge on reality series Project Runway, in addition to assorted appearances in movies and TV shows like Laurence Fishburne action movie Fled, Walker, Texas Ranger, and The Brady Bunch Movie.

RuPaul’s Drag Race finds RuPaul acting as host, coach, and judge while a number of contestants compete in challenges to be crowned America’s Next Drag Superstar. The show has been well received by critics and audiences since it debuted for its fun, upbeat tone and energetic performances. The series has run for eleven seasons so far, in addition to producing spinoffs such as RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars and Dancing Queen. RuPaul’s Drag Race season 9 proved to be an especially memorable year for the show, which included guest judges such as Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born), The B-52s and Andie McDowall. It was also the first season to air on VH1. Season 8 winner Cynthia Lee also returned to compete but finished the series in 10th place.

The grand finale of season 9 featured the final four queens in a lipsync showdown with one another, which came down to contestants Peppermint and Sasha Velour lipsyncing Whitney Houston’s “It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay.” Despite being neck and neck throughout, Sash Velour was crowned the winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 9. Valentina was also named Miss Congeniality and would go on to appear on the fourth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars.

Velour walked away from RuPaul’s Drag Race season 9 with a $100,000 prize and year’s supply of cosmetics. While the ninth season came in for critique by longtime fans for various changes to the format, such as an overreliance on lipsync battles, but the show still proved to be a ratings winner. Season 10 was received a little better overall, with contestant Aquaria ultimately crowned the winner after a lipsync battle performing the song “Bang Bang.” The franchise itself is showing no signs of slowing down either, with RuPaul’s Drag Race UK set to debut sometime in 2019, with Graham Norton acting as one of the judges.
