Kunal Nayyar explains why a The Big Bang Theory reunion won’t be happening anytime soon. Created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, the sitcom ran for 12 seasons from 2007 to 2019. Considering how popular it still was when it wrapped up, clamor for a reunion from its fans has been going on for a while now. Unfortunately, they shouldn’t expect it to come to fruition anytime soon.

Despite its storytelling problems, including an unbalanced final season, The Big Bang Theory surprisingly delivered an emotionally satisfying send-off to the Pasadena gang. Unlike other sitcoms, there weren’t any major lifestyle changes for the characters. Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) won the Nobel Prize in Physics, which had been the primary focus of the show’s final year. Meanwhile, it’s revealed that Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) were expecting their first child after having contradicting opinions about having kids. Despite these, the group simply continued with their well-established habits, including sharing a meal at Apartment 4A.

Naturally, fans want to know what the Pasadena gang has been up to since The Big Bang Theory wrapped. When asked about a potential reunion by Metro UK, Nayyar was open to the idea but pointed out that it’s too soon to do it. Read his full answer below:

“It’s only been two years since we ended Big Bang!

“We have to look slightly older. We’re living in this world right now full of reunions and I just think we’re not quite there yet. You can’t do a reunion, that would just be like doing a new season, we can’t do a reunion yet. Not that I’m saying we’re doing a new season!

“Yes, in the future, maybe. But not currently.”

Bialik had the same sentiment when asked about the idea back in April 2021. At that point, she revealed there weren’t any official plans about bringing them together, and it’s possibly due to the fact that it hasn’t been that long since The Big Bang Theory wrapped up. For context, the recent Friends special on HBO Max happened almost two decades since the sitcom wrapped up. In the meantime, fans can catch the cast of The Big Bang Theory separately as they star in other projects. Nayyar is set to debut in the new show, Suspicion; Kaley Cuoco is filming The Flight Attendant season 2, and Bialik is busy with Call Me Kat and sharing hosting Jeopardy! duties with Ken Jennings.

CBS, on the other hand, is still benefiting from the continued popularity of The Big Bang Theorythrough its first and only spin-off, Young Sheldon, which has been renewed until season 7. The show has also been a massive hit for them that its reruns supposedly earn higher ratings than most new comedy shows. Considering how successful the Iain Armitage-led sitcom is, it’s curious why the network hasn’t greenlit another offshoot for the nerdy sitcom yet.
