Since their debut in 2018, crewmates in Among Us have become iconic parts of pop culture. With their rounded bodies and stubby legs, they’re cutesy characters that help keep a social deduction game involving murder feeling more wacky than scary. Now, developer Innersloth has shared why these crewmates don’t have arms.

Crewmates in Among Us have been the subjects of fan art, t-shirts, and plenty of official merchandise. Recently, a chicken nugget shaped like an Among Us crewmate sold for almost $100,000. They’re practically inescapable now, appearing in other video games like Fall Guys and making appearances on late night TV shows. However, despite having hands that show up in promotional materials and in certain animations (like ejecting an Impostor or getting killed) all crewmates are missing arms.

The art style of Among Us has always been a cause for debate. This was especially true when Innersloth announced it would be revamping Among Us‘ art style in a new update. Some fans were concerned a new art style would take away from the game’s indie charm, while others eagerly welcomed a design change, feeling that Among Us’ design was a bit rough around the edges. However, it looks as if some thought went into the idea for crewmates to be missing arms – and the reason makes a lot of sense.

Among Us: What Crewmate Arms Would Look Like

Recently, Innersloth shared a tweet detailing (albeit facetiously) why crewmates don’t have arms in Among Us. In keeping with the game’s traditional art style, the crewmates (pictured above) have rounded arms and fingerless hands. The joke, of course, is that this could make them look like spiders – or at least some strange contorted figures that look rather creepy.

Of course, Innersloth is known for its playfulness, adding in inside jokes and easter eggs to Among Us regularly. This is probably just a joke, too; however, this may be the reason developers decided against arms for crewmates, since it does make crewmates look pretty scary. Either way, it’s a funny piece of Among Us artwork that should get a laugh out of many fans.

In the future, Innersloth is planning on adding more features to Among Us, including new roles and a fifth map. Based on how creepy this crewmate-with-arms looks, though, it’s unlikely this will appear officially in-game anytime soon. However, fans in the modding community may take it upon themselves to add this horrific crewmate into the game eventually.
