Katherine Langford was set to appear in Avengers: Endgame as a teenage Morgan Stark, but here’s why her Soul World cameo was cut. In the culmination of the Infinity Saga, the Marvel Cinematic Universe introduced the Soul World as a place that those who used the full power of the Infinity Gauntlet visit. Avengers: Infinity War showed Thanos there and interacting with a young Gamora after he snapped his fingers. But, the Soul World was not visited when either Iron Man or Hulk did the same in Avengers: Endgame.

The Avengers: Endgame creative team at one point considered showing Smart Hulk in the Soul World after bringing everyone back, but the idea never gained too much traction. However, the same isn’t true about Iron Man’s possible visit to the realm. In the lead up to Avengers: Endgame‘s release, it was reported that 13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford joined the cast in a top-secret role. Many initially thought she could be introduced as Kate Bishop, but fans were surprised to see the movie in April 2019 and not see Langford. It was later revealed she was meant to play Iron Man’s daughter Morgan as a teenager in Avengers: Endgame but her role was cut.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Langford was originally set to appear in Avengers: Endgame as Morgan in the Soul World. Following Iron Man’s use of the Infinity Stones to eliminate 2014 Thanos and his army, he was supposed to have a scene there with a future version of his daughter. Langford filmed the scene with Robert Downey Jr. but the Russos later discovered that the scene wasn’t working. They’ve since explained that the reasoning for removing the Morgan Stark Soul World scene was due to audiences having no emotional connection to the future version of the character. This also caused some general confusion about who she is and why Iron Man sees her.

The Russos may have cut Langford’s scene from Avengers: Endgame, but it has since been released. Marvel Studios and Disney put the deleted scene on Disney+ in late 2019, allowing subscribers a chance to see what was planned. A second version of the scene with commentary from the Russos is also included on the streaming service. The scene shows what would’ve served as a moment of closure for Tony Stark as he gets to see Morgan all grown up thanks to his heroic effort.

As disappointed as some were to see Langford not included in Avengers: Endgame, it is difficult to fault the Russos for cutting the scene. If Tony’s Soul World scene happened immediately after the snap just as Thanos’ in Infinity War, including this moment would halt the film’s momentum. Instead of getting to see the snap at work, there would be a pause for this scene and a hint that Iron Man wasn’t going to survive. For her part, Langford is fine with her Soul World scene getting cut if that was best for the movie.

Although Avengers: Endgame ultimately didn’t include her, there is always the chance that Langford could play Morgan Stark down the road. With a greater focus on the multiverse, an alternate version of Morgan could appear in a future MCU movie. There’s also the chance for her to return through the use of time travel. But, with Langford still enjoying her experience on Avengers: Endgame and her status as a rising actress in Hollywood, perhaps not playing Morgan Stark will allow her to get a different and bigger role.
