As the world continues to recover from the pandemic and build towards normalcy, Blizzard Entertainment announced plans for this year’s BlizzCon event. Unfortunately for fans of Overwatch, World of Warcraft, and other Blizzard properties, the yearly event won’t be held in 2021.

It’s been a tough year and change for BlizzCon, as the organizers cancelled 2020’s festivities in May. BlizzCon was one of many conventions and video game events, like E3 and Comic-Con International, that had to either cancel or go to a completely virtual endeavor. Blizzard Entertainment would later announce BlizzConline, a complete online event which took place in February 2021, and essentially replaced the California-based convention that would have taken place in 2020.

Saralyn Smith, Executive Producer of BlizzCon, announced the cancellation of BlizzCon 2021 in a blog post. Citing the ever-evolving pandemic procedures happening in California, Smith wrote the organizers have passed the point where they can make BlizzCon 2021 the best it can be by November. Calling it “a complex affair,” Smith explained it was best for all involved, including production partners, esports pros, hosts, entertainers, artists, and other collaborators, both locally and globally, that the event be cancelled this year.

Will There Be A BlizzCon 2022?

Unlike last year, the cancellation of BlizzCon won’t be replaced by an online-only event similar to the one that took place in February. According to Smith’s blog post, the BlizzCon organizers are looking to hold another event in early 2022, but it’ll be a hybrid convention, which combines some aspects of BlizzConline with smaller in-person gatherings. More information on this new event will be released at a later date.

While it wasn’t the same as an in-person conference, BlizzConline didn’t skimp on details Blizzard fans were looking for. Diablo players were treated to the reveal of Diablo II: Resurrected, a faithful remaster of the classic game for PC and consoles coming later this year, and the announcement the Rogue class is being added to Diablo IV. It was also announced that Hearthstone is getting a new core set and will introduce the Classic format for players looking to craft and play decks using the original cards that were launched in 2014.

Overwatch fans were treated to a behind-the-scenes look at Overwatch 2‘s returning features and some new ones, and World of Warcraft announced Burning Crusade Classic to launch later this year. There were plenty of announcements and details for the slate of Blizzard titles during this year’s BlizzConline, and what fans can expect from the convention in 2022 could exceed it. When 2022 comes around, Overwatch 2 should be closer to release, and Blizzard will likely have plenty of updates on World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, and much more.
