Many fans of the Dark Souls series have been eagerly awaiting the fan-made sequel Nightfall, however, the mod’s release has been delayed. Nightfall was created by Scott “Grimrukh” Mooney, a software developer who creates mods and modding tools for Dark Souls in their spare time. Mooney began creating Nightfall in 2019 and in 2020 assembled a team to create the mod. Mooney and the team released a mod reveal video for Nightfall in February 2021, showing off some of the mod’s new mechanics like a day and night cycle.

Nightfall will be a direct sequel to  2011’s Dark Souls which was developed by FromSoftware and will be created using the game’s engine and most of its current assets. The second entry into the series, Dark Souls 2, is a true sequel to the first game but is set so far in the future of the world that some fans don’t consider it a sequel to the story of the original. Nightfall, however, will be a direct sequel and will feature enemies new and old as well as new side-quests and NPCs.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Nightfall’s original release date was December 21, 2021, but has now been pushed back. The new release date for Nightfall is now January 21, 2022, which was the original release date of Elden Ring. Mooney explains that the decision to delay the mod’s release by a month is partly due to Elden Ring being delayed, but also due to the development team wanting to add more content to Nightfall and needing extra time. Barring any other changes to release dates, fans of director Hidetaka Miyazaki’s games will still have a month to play Nightfall before Elden Ring launches.

Elden Ring Delay Pushes Back Nightfall Release Date

Most Dark Souls fans are likely not too upset by the delays of these two games, as long waits between announcements and launches are common things in the series. Elden Ring was first announced back at E3 in 2019 and finally got a trailer and release date two years later. Elden Ring’s release date will now be nearly six years after Dark Souls 3’s release, and three years since Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice’s release. Nightfall was meant to help fill the gap for a short time before the latest FromSoftware title was finally available for fans to play, but once again they’ll have to wait.

Dark Souls: Nightfall released a new mod release date update trailer on its YouTube channel, and also confirmed in a comment that Nightfall will only work on the Dark Souls Remastered version and not the Prepare to Die Edition of the game. The Prepare to Die edition was released in 2012 and contained extra PvP and PvE content, while the Dark Souls Remastered game was released in 2018 with improved graphics and performance as well as the content in the Prepare to Die Edition and the Artorias of the Abyss DLC.

The delays to Elden Ring and Dark Souls: Nightfall are disappointing but will hopefully be worth the wait. Nightfall’s delay means fans won’t now get an extra month between it and Elden Ring, but the extra time should result in the mod having more quality and quantity for players to enjoy in the month before the new game is finally released. After such a long time since any new SoulsBorne game has come out, fans have been excited that two things are releasing at once. Elden Ring won Most Anticipated Game for the second year in a row at The Game Awards 2021, and Dark Souls: Nightfall‘s release a month prior will perfectly bridge that gap.
