Dominic Toretto’s silver cross necklace will hold a significant meaning in F9 as it has in the rest of The Fast Saga. The piece of jewelry is synonymous with the character that Vin Diesel has portrayed since 2001. With the necklace making an appearance in nearly every installment of the franchise, some viewers might be wondering what’s the deal with the cross. Here’s what it symbolizes for The Fast Saga and how it comes into play during Fast & Furious 9.

The Fast Saga officially kicked off in 2001 with the release of The Fast and the Furious. The movie, directed by Rob Cohen, followed Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker), an undercover cop who infiltrated a street racing ring to identify car hijackers led by Dominic Toretto (Diesel). Brian ended up helping Dom and allowed him to escape but the duo’s journey didn’t end there. The pair led a number of missions against drug lords, criminal masterminds, and national terrorists throughout The Fast Saga. With Brian out of the picture as a result of Walker’s untimely passing, Dom continues to protect his crew.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

As part of the promotional campaign for the release of F9, Dom’s distinguishable necklace can be seen in the front and center of some of the posters. The cross hangs as a car ornament on the mirror of Dom’s car but it has an even more prominent role in Fast & Furious 9‘s first trailer footage. As Dom gets a taste of the domestic life living with Letty and raising his son, Brian, the necklace comes back into focus. Letty is seen wearing the cross but she gifts it to “little Brian” for protection of what’s to come. Dom is later seen touching the cross but it’s unclear if this moment occurs before or after Brian became the recipient of the symbolic piece of jewelry. It’s understandable why Letty views the necklace as a form of protection but it also holds another meaning: Dom’s love for his family.

Dom’s Necklace Is A Symbol Of Family In The Fast Saga

Dom wears the silver necklace for the first time in 2001’s The Fast and the Furious when he challenges Brian to a race. The necklace makes its return in 2009 with Fast & Furious when the crew is on the run. In the time that has passed, Dom and Letty got married and used the necklace as a symbol of their union in lieu of a ring. Dom loses possession of the necklace a few times over the course of The Fast Saga. He left it for Letty and later found it as her car ornament at the site of her presumed deadly crash. Dom also lost the cross in Rio de Janeiro during Fast Five but quickly got it back from Elena proclaiming that risking his safety for jewelry was worth it.

When Dom learned that Letty was still alive, he tried to use the symbolic necklace to bring back his wife’s memory. He willingly gave it to her in Fast & Furious 6 but it was passed on to Owen Shaw who left it with Han’s belongings as a sign that he was involved with the assassination attempt. Letty later regained her memory when holding the cross, almost as if the cross had mystical powers when it came to the bond between loved ones. Dom even planted a tracking device in the necklace so his crew could find the location of his son after aligning with Cipher in The Fate of the Furious. The piece of silver sure has the ability to protect Dom’s loved ones but more importantly, it serves as a reminder that he’s willing to do anything for his family, something that will once again be on display in F9.
