Despite his history with the MUTOs, Godzilla chose not to have a fight with the third MUTO in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. It was revealed in the movie that one of the Titans hiding in the MonsterVerse is a MUTO. Along with the other monsters, the MUTO emerged after Ghidorah’s call. For part of the movie, she served the three-headed dragon as one of his many minions but switched her allegiance to Godzilla following Ghidorah’s defeat.

Godzilla has a long relationship with the MUTOs in the MonsterVerse as the iconic creature’s ancestor was apparently killed by them thousands of years ago. In the 2014 movie, their hunger for radiation puts their species back on Godzilla’s radar. After coming out of hiding, two MUTOs come together to mate but are interrupted by Godzilla, who has risen out of the depths of the ocean to hunt them down. Godzilla does battle with both of them, but eventually, they manage to get the best of him. After recovering, Godzilla gets the male MUTO alone and kills him. At the end of the movie, Godzilla finishes off the female MUTO by blasting atomic breath down her throat.

To many (and perhaps to Godzilla as well), the deaths of these creatures appeared to be the end for the MUTOs in the MonsterVerse, but Godzilla: King of the Monsters confirmed the survival of their species with the introduction of a third MUTO, which has been described by the movie’s director as their queen. But instead of being a new enemy for Godzilla to fight, the MUTO ultimately becomes one of Godzilla’s minions when she follows Rodan’s lead and bows down to him. Godzilla is seen looking at the creature, but he doesn’t attack her, likely because her actions have made her death unnecessary.

The scene with Rodan, Methuselah, Scylla, Behemoth, and the MUTO is a moment with symbolic meaning. Their decision to accept Godzilla as their alpha means that from now on, they will serve him loyally. And the Godzilla: King of the Monsters credits indicates that they are indeed following Godzilla’s orders, considering that they’re currently staying out of trouble. If Godzilla knows that he can control these Titans, then that means he knows he has nothing he has to worry about with the third MUTO. The other two threatened to disrupt the balance of nature in the 2014 film, but if Godzilla can keep her in line, then there’s really no need for him to kill her.

As for why she doesn’t retaliate against Godzilla for killing members of her kind, Dougherty has offered a rather simple explanation: she “isn’t stupid” [via Godzilla-Movies]. Knowing what Godzilla just did to Ghidorah, it must have been clear to the third MUTO and the other surrounding Titans that Godzilla is a forced to be reckoned with. Having realized that it would be unwise to be his enemy, the MUTO has decided that it would be best to be his ally instead. For this reason, she could end up fighting on Godzilla’s side in a future MonsterVerse movie.
