The newly-announced Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR port likely won’t come to PSVR, at least not anytime soon. Rockstar Games has ventured off into VR once before with LA Noire which eventually came to PSVR, but GTA: San Andreas is releasing under different circumstances. On October 28, 2021, Facebook announced that GTA: San Andreas is coming to Quest 2, but no other platforms have been mentioned.

The reveal was specifically catered to this device and the actual announcement itself was made by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. It’s was a pretty substantial moment during the tech giant’s Facebook Connect event and it certainly makes it seem like some deals were made behind closed doors to bring this game to life. Rockstar has been working on the game since at least 2020, as there were rumblings of a new Rockstar VR game in the summer of last year.

Rockstar is a bit busy with preparing for the imminent November release of the remastered GTA trilogy, so details are a bit scarce on this new VR version of San Andreas. All that has been revealed is that the game is coming to Oculus Quest 2 at some point in the future, but no footage or screenshots have been released. That said, if the game was coming to other platforms, Rockstar would’ve probably confirmed it already.

Why Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR Probably Isn’t Coming To PlayStation VR At Launch

Rockstar probably won’t be bringing this version of San Andreas to other platforms at launch, if ever, for a few reasons. The biggest reason is that Rockstar and Facebook likely made some sort of deal to bring the game to Oculus Quest 2 exclusively. The fact the news was announced during a Facebook event and Rockstar didn’t follow-up with any blog post to clarify additional VR platforms indicates there’s nothing else to really say about the project at this time.

Following the recent release of Resident Evil 4 VR on Oculus Quest 2, it’s seems like Facebook is leveraging its deep pockets to secure massive games from some of the biggest developers. At the very least, Facebook will want to try and keep GTA: San Andreas as a timed exclusive for a certain amount of months or years. With that said, there’s always the chance it jumps to other platforms later. Although it’s unclear if there was any sort of deal involved, LA Noire was a Vive exclusive before eventually coming to Oculus after a few months and PSVR two years later.

That said, PlayStation’s current technology may also be too limited for something as intricate as Grand Theft Auto. Earlier this year, Sony detailed the new PlayStation VR 2 and confirmed it will be far more versatile than the previous iteration. Not only will the controllers be more in line with the competition, but it’ll also likely be able to harness more of the power of the PS5. With that said, Rockstar may have to wait to bring GTA: San Andreas to PSVR2, especially if it’s held back by some sort of timed exclusivity with Facebook.

There’s no word on how dense this new version of the iconic PS2-era game will be, as LA Noire was a scaled back version of the original game. If it really is the full Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas experience, it’s hard to say if PSVR can really keep up with that, even if it’s an older game. VR is such an intensive extension of the gaming medium and it’s definitely going to be a challenge to accurately capture the magic of Rockstar’s beloved open-world epic in that space, especially if it comes to a console.
