Here’s why Happy Death Day’s killer wears a distinctive baby mask – and what they also wore instead. Blumhouse has emerged in the last decade or so as a leader in the horror genre. They produced huge hits like Halloween 2018, Get Out, The Purge franchise, Upgrade, and many more. That’s not to say they haven’t produced their fair share of duds too, as Fantasy Island or Ouija has shown, but their high-concept, low-budget model has certainly paid off in most cases.

Happy Death Day is another good example of their model, which featured a university student named Tree (Jessica Rothe) being murdered by a killer wearing a baby mask – only to find the day repeating itself every time she dies. This Groundhog Day-inspired time loop combined with the movie’s witty script made it a lot of fun, and it grossed over $120 million worldwide. Happy Death Day 2U changed genres somewhat, shifting from a slasher movie with a twist to more of a time-traveling black comedy, which also explained how the loop came to be. While the sequel’s goofier tone had its fans, it only grossed about half of its predecessor’s haul, making a third entry unlikely.

The mask the Babyface Killer is wearing in the Happy Death Day movies is that of the Bayfield Baby, the mascot for the university’s football team. It’s a simple but distinctive concept for a mask, and the movie’s director Christoper Landon revealed to Newsweek that when he was prepping the movie he and his partner were expecting a baby. The idea of fatherhood and fears of being a bad parent started to slip into the story, which inspired the idea of the killer wearing a baby mask.

The babyface mask wasn’t the only concept for Happy Death Day, however, with a pig mask also being considered. Landon ultimately opted for the baby mask. The Saw franchise had previously seen Amanda Young and others don a pig mask when stalking victims, to the point where The Pig was added to hit video game Dead By Daylight as a playable killer.

While it’s too bad a Happy Death Day 3 is unlikely, the first two movies make for an entertaining duology. The second entry, in particular, is already building a cult following for its change in direction and the way it built on Happy Death Day. The babyface mask is also destined to become a popular – and simple – Halloween outfit in the years ahead.
