Adam Green and Joe Lynch’s horror-themed sitcom, Holliston, has been picked up by the AMC-run horror streaming network, Shudder, bringing it into the spotlight for the first time in seven years, but where’s season 3? For fans who have been with the show from the beginning from its first debut on FEARnet, the season 2 series ender has left them on an agonizing cliffhanger.

Set in the small New England town of Holliston, Massachusetts, Holliston follows Adam and Joe as aspiring horror directors and massive horror fans who film cable commercials as they navigate real life and chase their dream to become filmmakers. The series also stars Corri English as Adam’s ex-girlfriend, Laura Ortiz as Joe’s girlfriend, and Dave Brockie as Adam’s imaginary friend, Oderus Urungus.

The show has tons of heart and has received mostly favorable reviews both from horror fans and from critics, but after season 2, the show went on an extended hiatus and never returned. So, why is it taking so long to film season 3, and when, if ever, can fans expect to find out what happens to Adam and Joe?

Why Holliston Ended After Season 2

Holliston debuted on the FEARnet cable television network in 2012 as the channel’s first-ever original series. The series was produced by Adam Green’s production company, ArieScope Pictures, in association with FEARnet’s president at the time, Peter Block’s, own production company, A Bigger Boat.

After the show’s first season aired, in April of 2012 FEARnet announced that it had not only picked up Holliston for season 2—scheduled for summer 2013—but had also increased the number of episodes for the season from six episodes to ten. The network also approved the release of a one-hour Christmas special to bridge the gap between season 1 and season 2 in December of 2012. After season 2 of Holliston was released in the summer of 2013, the end of 2013 saw the show take an extended hiatus as Adam Green and Joe Lynch went to work on their next film projects, Digging Up the Marrow and Everly, respectively.

Unfortunately, the hiatus would go on indefinitely as the first of several tragedies hit when Dave Brockie, aka Oderus Urungus of GWAR and Adam’s imaginary friend in Holliston, passed away on March 23, 2014.

Then, in April of 2014, FEARnet was purchased by Comcast with plans to merge the channel’s programming with Comcast’s existing horror network, Chiller. FEARnet aired its last show on July 30, 2014 at midnight, and Holliston would never be revived under the new network. Chiller also shut down in 2017.

When Fans Could Expect Holliston Season 3

As AMC’s Shudder becomes more successful among genre fans, Holliston releasing on the network offers some major promise for the show’s future. Adam Green and Joe Lynch have also not been quiet about their hopes for Shudder to revive their most beloved project. In a recent all-night live stream on the ArieScope Pictures website, Green and Lynch told fans that they’re prepared to pick up writing Holliston season 3, should Shudder offer them the opportunity. After seven years of hiatus, Holliston could finally be revived by the up-and-coming horror streaming network. Holliston releases on Shudder September 14, 2020.
