Why Is The Glass Onion Important? Knives Out 2 Trailer Gives Us A Hint

With the release of the first Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery trailer, Knives Out 2 may have finally revealed the importance of the Glass Onion. Set to premiere on Netflix on December 23, 2022, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will serve as a sequel to Knives Out. The upcoming murder mystery movie will continue to follow the exploits of Detective Benoit Blanc. However, Blanc will be the only returning character as the rest of the ensemble cast changes for a new mystery. Rather than focusing on a single family, Knives Out 2 will follow tech billionaire Miles Bron and his friends investigating a murder on his private Greek island.

Until the release of the Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery trailer, the meaning of the phrase “Glass Onion” was solely abstract. The trailer may have finally unveiled the real Glass Onion though. In a brief shot, the Knives Out 2 trailer showed Bron’s mansion. While the entire building was impressive, its most prominent feature was a huge glass dome on top. Although the dome was not named in the Knives Out 2 trailer, this massive structure was most likely the Glass Onion.

On the surface, the Glass Onion serves as an interesting set piece. However, the dome probably has a deeper meaning given that Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was named after it. Since the Knives Out 2 trailer did not show any detailed images of the Glass Onion, especially from the inside, it is uncertain how the dome will affect the plot. Still, the trailer suggested that the Glass Onion will be important as the perfect location for a murder mystery and an even more mysterious setting than that of the first Knives Out.

Glass Onion’s Setting Beats Knives Out 1 In One Important Way

The Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery trailer hinted that the story may start as a vacation with a fake murder mystery party. Due to this, Bron’s mansion on an isolated island is originally meant to be a fun game site. When a real murder occurs though, the mansion becomes the perfect setting for a true mystery. With its unique design, the Glass Onion should play a major role in this. Since the dome is transparent, characters will be able to see each other through the Glass Onion, but this does not mean they will always understand what they see. In this way, the Glass Onion may initially seem to aid in the investigation by allowing more characters to give clues about events they saw. However, this also sets up countless red herrings, adding twists to the mystery.

In addition, the Glass Onion will contrast the setting of the first Knives Out in one key way. In Knives Out, writer and family patriarch Harlan Thrombey was found dead in his own home. Although the sprawling, antique mansion was a great location for a mystery, the majority of Thrombey’s family had grown up in or frequently visited there. Due to this, the characters already knew many of the house’s secrets. In contrast, only Bron would be familiar with his mansion in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. The rest of the cast, Bron’s friends and guests, would be unfamiliar with the Glass Onion, allowing for more opulent and mysterious setting reveals. Although the dome only appeared briefly, the Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery trailer hinted that the Glass Onion will be important due to making the mystery even more complex and surprising.
