One of the series most-ingrained in the DNA of adventure games is King’s Quest, the brainchild of Sierra Entertainment’s Roberta Williams. Since its first release in the ’80s, generations of computer gamers have grown up experiencing the games’ high fantasy setting for themselves. King’s Quest is an iconic series, but it hasn’t gotten a new mainline entry since King’s Quest 8: Mask of Eternity in 1998. Now is the perfect time to revive the series with King’s Quest 9.

Despite some spin-offs and a reboot in 2015, the series isn’t as popular as it once was. King’s Quest still has a legion of loyal followers, however, and it’s a shame a ninth mainline entry has never happened. There have been several attempts over the years to revive the series with a King’s Quest 9, and creator Roberta Williams has alluded to ideas for the game in the past. Through several corporate buyouts and mergers, Sierra Entertainment no longer exists, but this is only one of the contributing factors to the problems facing King’s Quest 9. There are other reasons why a ninth installment has never seen the light of day.

One of the main reasons King’s Quest 9 was cancelled originally is that King’s Quest 8 was loathed by its fanbase and adventure game enthusiasts in general. Mask of Eternity just changed the game’s formula too much. Instead of focusing on a member of Daventry’s royal family, there was a completely new protagonist. The game also dropped its signature cartoonish art design and altered its gameplay from 2D to 3D. It was a King’s Quest game that didn’t really feel like King’s Quest. That’s all in the past, though, and now the time is ripe for King’s Quest 9 to finally happen.

Why King’s Quest 9 Should Be Released Now

An episodic reboot of King’s Quest appeared in 2015, and received fairly good reviews and sales. However, it wasn’t the ninth mainline entry many fans wanted. King’s Quest 9 would be a great way to appeal to older fans while hopefully appealing to a new generation. With classic adventure franchises like Sam and Max being revived, now is the perfect time for a King’s Quest revival.

Demand is high for ’80s and ’90s games right now. That’s why everything from Battletoads to Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is making a comeback. King’s Quest could cash in on that nostalgia too, and the best way to reinvigorate its fanbase is with a new mainline entry.

For almost two decades, loyal fans have been wishing for a King’s Quest 9. At a time when classics are being revived and the demand for older series is high, now would be perfect. It could give series veterans a game they’ve wanted and introduce King’s Quest to an entirely new generation.
