The first trailer and images from The Witcher season 2 have been released, giving a look at some of the new characters that will join the show, among those Lambert, who looks very different from his video game version. Created by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher is a series of novels and short stories that gained more popularity when they branched out to video games and were also adapted into a movie and TV show in Poland in 2001 and 2002. An English version finally arrived in 2019 thanks to Netflix, further expanding the fanbase of the books and video games.

Netflix’s The Witcher approached Sapkowski’s stories differently and followed three characters whose stories are set in different places and points in time, with their paths converging towards the end of the season. These characters are the title witcher, Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill); Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), a powerful sorceress; and Ciri (Freya Allan), the crown princess of Cintra who was starting to discover her powers. By the end of The Witcher season 1, Geralt and Ciri had found each other as they are linked by the Law of Surprise, and season 2 will see them arriving at the safest place there is and meeting new characters that will be important in Ciri’s arc.

The Witcher season 2 will take viewers to Kaer Morhen, an old keep where the witchers of the School of the Wolf used to be trained, including Geralt and his mentor Vesemir (Kim Bodnia). After the fall of Cintra and with the Nilfgaardian army still looking for Ciri, the safest place they can be at is Kaer Morhen, and Ciri will count on the help of other witchers who will train her on different disciplines and areas. Aside from Vesemir, The Witcher season 2 will introduce Eskel (Basil Eidenbenz), Coën (Yasen Atour), and Lambert (Paul Bullion), but the latter has been given a completely different look from the one fans of The Witcher know well.

Lambert is one of many characters from the universe of The Witcher who have appeared in the video games, so fans already had an idea of what the character would look like – however, the video games are a separate branch from the books’ canon and the Netflix series is based on the books, not the games. Lambert in the video games has very short dark hair and a scar that crosses the right side of his face, but the first look at the character in The Witcher season 2 reveals he will look nothing like that. Instead, Bullion kept his red hair and so Lambert will sport long, red hair and a long beard, and fans were quick to point out these differences and more on social media. Although an exact reason as to why Lambert’s look is not the same as in the video games hasn’t been revealed (yet), it most likely has to do with the series being based on the books and not the video games, giving the production team more freedom when building their characters.

Changing Lambert’s physical appearance shouldn’t be a problem as long as his personality (which is a very strong one) and role in The Witcher remain the same as in the source material, and it’s important to remember that the video games are more of an extension of the books rather than part of their canon, so the characters in the series aren’t forced to look the same as in the games.
