New footage from Loki includes Tom Hiddleston’s god of mischief repeating a line from 2012’s The Avengers, and it’s because this Loki is from 2012. When Avengers: Infinity War began with Thanos killing Loki, Marvel Studios teased that there would be “no resurrections this time” for the fan-favorite character. This might have been the plan at the time, but the introduction of Disney+ as an avenue for Marvel Cinematic Universe content changed things. After WandaVision and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier dominated pop culture conversations, Loki is positioned to do the same with the return of Hiddleston’s MCU character.

The return of Loki on Disney+ was accidentally set up through Avengers: Endgame. During the Avengers’ time travel missions, they went to 2012 and the events of The Avengers to obtain the Time Stone, Mind Stone, and Space Stone. However, the Space Stone – also known as the Tesseract – falls into Loki’s hands instead. After he uses it to evade capture by the Avengers, Loki will continue his story after the Time Variance Authority come for him. This will include a story that travels across the multiverse with a familiar version of Loki, albeit one audiences haven’t spent a lot of time with recently.

Loki is centered around the version of the trickster from 2012 in the MCU. This explains why in the latest TV spot for the series Loki is heard repeating a familiar phrase from The Avengers. He says, “I am Loki and I’m burdened with glorious purpose.” Based on when the line is said and context clues provided in other trailers, Loki repeats this line immediately after using the Tesseract in Avengers: Endgame and before the TVA takes him. Loki originally says “I am Loki of Asgard and I’m burdened with glorious purpose” at the start of The Avengers after he uses the Tesseract to travel to the inside of SHIELD’s base on Earth.

Even though it has been nearly a decade since Loki said this in our time, barely any time has passed for this version of Loki. The time that passes between his arrival on Earth and where Loki seemingly begins is only a few days at most. Repeating this line is a reminder of how this Loki is far different from the one on the verge of redemption, if Marvel didn’t fully redeem him already. As seen in the Loki TV spot, he’s still completely a villain and hungry to rule any planet. Loki might now be in a different universe and place in time when he reuses the saying on Disney+, but it should be a great immediate reminder to viewers that this is an alternate universe version of the trickster from 2012.

It is also somewhat funny to consider the possibility that “I am Loki of Asgard and I’m burdened with glorious purpose” is essentially his introductory saying. Since he previously said this to tell Nick Fury who he is, Loki repeating it when he encounters some Mongolians likely isn’t a coincidence. He’s attempting to convey how he is above them and deserves to be their leader. If Loki shows the character or variants of Loki across the multiverse trying to conquer worlds, there’s a chance this line is heard repeatedly throughout the series.
