Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Lucifer season 5, Part 1.

Dan Espinoza finally learned the full truth about Lucifer Morningstar in Luciferseason 5 here’s why Michael facilitated that reveal. Based on a version of the biblical figure created by Neil Gaiman, Lucifer premiered on Fox in 2016 and ran for three seasons. Following its cancellation, the show was saved for Netflix through to a planned sixth and final season. Throughout the show’s combined run, Lucifer has spoken openly about the fact that he’s actually The Devil.

Despite that, the rest of the show’s characters passed it off as a metaphor and a quirk of his personality. That began to change when Chloe discovered the truth in the Lucifer season 3 finale and came to terms with it in subsequent episodes. Lucifer season 5 saw Chloe’s ex-husband and fellow detective, Dan, follow suit. Posing as his twin brother, Michael lured Dan back to Amenadiel’s house where Lucifer was entertaining baby Charlie with his devil face. Understandably alarmed and distressed, Dan was then visited by Michael in his full angelic form. Michael immediately manipulated the hapless human even further.

Arriving unannounced at Lucifer’s penthouse, Dan acted as a more human version of The Sword of Michael. Confronting Lucifer, he drew a gun and pulled the trigger. On the surface, it appeared that Michael’s overall ambition was for Dan to kill Lucifer. After all, Chloe was present for the potentially tragic event. Ordinarily, that would have been enough to make the bullet fatally effective. However, it was revealed that Lucifer was once again completely invulnerable, even around her. As a result, the gunshot had no effect whatsoever. It’s at that moment that Michael’s true motivation for sending Dan on his quest became clearer. Rather than kill Lucifer, the act was designed to expose him.

Earlier in the season, Michael amended his ambition from breaking Lucifer’s life to taking it. After his attempt to usurp Lucifer’s place was revealed, though, he evidently went back to the former. During the Lucifer season 5, part 1 finale, he repeatedly stated that everything was merely part of a bigger plan. The full extent of his machinations will remain unclear until the second batch of episodes is released; however, an obvious aspect of the plan is turning Lucifer’s friends and loved ones against him. By exposing Lucifer’s invulnerability, Michael was able to play more efficiently on Chloe’s fears and seed doubt regarding her relationship with Lucifer suggesting that his returned powers were a result of him pulling away. With time also having been stopped by Michael’s machinations — showing that Amenadiel has his abilities back too — Lucifer will have to find a way to clear up that mess in the upcoming episodes.

Equally, by revealing the truth to Dan, it also ruined what friendship Dan and Lucifer had begun to rebuild. After an extremely rocky dynamic in Lucifer season 4, the pair had bonded again. Lucifer worked closely with Daniel rather than Chloe on multiple occasions. Furthermore, Lucifer even actively wore a new-age bracelet that Dan had gifted him. Michael’s revelation was very much a case of using one stone to kill two birds, in order to more fully decimate the connections that Lucifer has with the people in his life.

Of course, Michael’s plan will likely have the exact opposite effect in the long run. By episode’s end, Dan had already started to come around. He got to note first-hand how Lucifer, despite being perceived as evil, genuinely cared about Chloe. Learning the truth will likely also prove beneficial for Dan. Ever since Charlotte’s death, he has struggled on several fronts and sought solace wherever he can find it. Now he will have something he knows to be real, something tangible, from which he can eventually draw strength and faith especially if gets to meet the newly arrived God. Dan finally being in the know will also give Lucifer even more allies and a stronger support system for whatever is to come in the second half of Lucifer season 5.
