While jumping into the newest Marvel installment, fans may have noticed that Spider-Man: Miles Morales is missing a familiar face from the first game. Miles’ father will not be making an appearance in the continued storyline, even though his actions throughout the first game have impacted not just his son, but Peter Parker as well. The missing police officer’s heroic story arc through the first game turned him into a legend, but unfortunately, this heroism had a tragic end that affects the course of Miles’ life.

[Warning: Spoilers for Spider-Man: Miles Morales below]

Miles’ father was a police officer for New York in the original 2018 release of Marvel’s Spider-Man. He worked with Peter to uncover and apprehend the Inner Demons, antagonist Mister Negative’s lackeys. He is a kind-hearted and good-natured man who genuinely wants to make the world better. Peter becomes close to Davis while they work together, as well as his son Miles. Jefferson also has a brother, Aaron Davis, who is revealed to be Prowler, a troubled man who eventually shifts sides throughout Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

As the story unfolds in the first Spider-Man game, Jefferson’s involvement becomes his ultimate downfall. While receiving a reward from Mayor Norman Osborn at the city hall, the Inner Demons attack. The Deputy Mayor is revealed to be a member of the antagonist group and attempts to detonate explosives in the crowd. Jefferson uses his own body as a shield, throwing himself on the Deputy Mayor and giving his own life to save the innocent bystanders around him. Unfortunately, Miles is forced to witness his death, as he was present with his mother for the award ceremony.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales Will Not See Jefferson Davis Return

The heroic death of Jefferson Davis has a large impact on the sequel, as Miles Morales and his mother return to Harlem where she decides to run for political office. Miles is greatly impacted by the loss of his father, and turns to Peter for strength and guidance as he navigates his grief and attempts to understand what it means to be a hero. Peter also carries a large weight of guilt for Jefferson’s untimely death, taking responsibility for not being able to save him from the Inner Demons and Mister Negative. This drives him to take Miles, who has also been bitten by a genetically altered spider, under his wing for training as a Spider-Man. This allows Miles to learn the weight of what it means to be a hero, and what it means to be willing to sacrifice everything to protect others.

Miles picks up the mantel of Spider-Man in style, as the sequel follows the young hero-to-be in his journey to understand his place in the world. While the game doesn’t have Jefferson Davis as an active character, his influence has left it’s mark on the characters and the story. Spider-Man: Miles Morales shows that greatness comes from within, and that doing the right thing has consequences that echo out through the lives of everyone involved. The loss of a great man like Jefferson Davis, while a tragedy, allows Miles’ to reach within himself and take the risks that are required for him to become New York’s newest web-slinging hero.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is out now on PS4 & PS5.
