The Walking Dead actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan reveals why Negan returned to fight Beta in the climax of the Whisperer War. After six months, the long-running zombie thriller returned this past Sunday. Despite serving as the grand conclusion to the current story, “A Certain Doom” was the least-watched episode of The Walking Dead.

The Whisperer War was arguably one of the most interesting storylines on The Walking Dead. The threat of the Whisperers became ever present as the characters realized people were wearing the skins of the dead. Viewers learned about the Whisperers’ philosophy through their leader, Alpha. The Whisperer leader really made her impact with the infamous heads on spikes scene, killing a large number of the surivors. Alpha would later be killed by Negan in a plot enacted by Carol, but the Whisperer War didn’t end there. Beta gathered all the Whisperers and an army of walkers to lay siege on the protagonists. In “A Certain Doom,” the war reached its conclusion, and it was thanks to Negan that Daryl was able to get the pivotal stab on Beta and end the war.

During The Walking Dead panel at New York Comic-Con, Jeffrey Dean Morgan discussed why Negan – who earlier in the episode appeared to abandon the group – decided to return and fight Beta in the climax. According to the actor, Negan knew he would be good bait for Beta.

“Well I think he knows he has to, I think, ultimately he knows he has to. And I think he knows he’s really good bait in that circumstance to get Beta. Plus, Beta’s a prick, y’know?”

For comic book readers, it wasn’t a surprise to see Negan take part in the final battle. However, it was different than how it goes down on page. In the comic book version, the fight between the two is much longer. In fact, Dwight is still around, and he throws Negan the latter’s infamous baseball bat in the pivotal scene. This actually leads to Lucille breaking in the battle against Beta. Because the comic book version is more involved, it’s understandable not all fans are satisfied with the brief skirmish in the show’s version. Still, within the show’s context, it was a smart move for Negan to use Beta’s hatred of him as bait. As a whole, Negan’s role in the episode helps to further cement his redemption storyline.

Near the end of “A Certain Doom,” Lydia asks Negan if he’s still here with the communities. Negan’s response is simply, “For now.” In the comic book version, Negan left after the Whisperer War, never again interacting with the characters aside from Maggie. In the show, it appears Negan will have a part in the upcoming Commonwealth storyline. It will be interesting seeing where Negan’s story goes from here in The Walking Dead, especially his interactions with Maggie now that the former Hilltop leader has returned.
