Zooey Deschanel reveals why the New Girl writers didn’t have Jess and Nick get together right away. Earlier this year, Deschanel announced the Welcome to Our Show Podcast that she is hosting with her New Girl co-stars, Hannah Simone (Cece Parekh) and Lamorne Morris (Winston Bishop). The podcast discusses different plotlines from the show and behind-the-scenes tidbits, with the occasional visit from other New Girl cast and crew members. This show is following a trend of similar re-watch podcasts, like Showmance: Glee Recap Edition and Office Ladies, which have become increasingly popular with fans looking for more content from their favorite shows.

New Girl was renowned during its run from 2011-18 and remains a staple show for sitcom fans. The series kicks off after Jess (Deschanel) moves into a loft in L.A. with three strange men (Nick, Schmidt, and Winston), following her catching her then-boyfriend cheating. Despite Nick’s (Jake Johnson) initial coldness towards Jess, their awkward romantic tension quickly becomes a foundation for the series.

In the Welcome to Our Show episode 2 (via ET), Deschanel remembers a discussion she had with the New Girl writers about Jess and Nick’s relationship. In spite of their romantic plotline, the writers did everything they could to keep the characters apart. Jess and Nick’s romance was intended to be gradual, but Deschanel and Johnson’s dynamic didn’t allow for this. She recalls feeling confused after being told that the writers didn’t want Nick and Jess to share storylines because of their “great chemistry.

They were like, ‘Listen, you guys have such great chemistry. This is a series. We have to play this out over time, and we don’t want to put you guys in the same storylines together.’ I was like, ‘Isn’t that a good thing?’ I think we all had good chemistry together from the get-go, in different ways. They did say they wanted to play out that storyline, that our chemistry was really good.

The New Girl writers stretched out their romance by acknowledging their chemistry early on, only to have them break up again, much to fans’ disappointment. Nick and Jess’ love story was teased well into season 6, keeping viewers guessing as to when and how this polar-opposite couple would get (and stay) together. Some viewers felt that the excessive attention put on their relationship was a mistake. Regardless, this strategy must have worked to keep viewers excited about the show, as in its seven-season run, it earned several Golden Globe- and Primetime Emmy nominations. The incredible dynamics created between all of the characters earned many of the cast members awards for their outstanding performances.

New Girl is filled with romantic plotlines and heartbreak for all of the characters. Jess and Nick are seen in relationships with countless others throughout the series run, but nothing quite rivals their adorkable love story. Their undeniable chemistry kept fans coming back for more, and after being made to wait years, fans were ecstatic to see the couple finally stay together.
