Computer hardware company EVGA has explained why some of its RTX 3090 graphics cards broke during the recent closed beta period of Amazon’s MMORPG New World. The beta lasted from July 20th to August 2nd, and as a result of feedback received during the event, Amazon decided to delay the full release of New World, pushing it back to September 28th.

During the delay announcement, Amazon noted that more than a million players participated in the beta, logging over 25 million hours total. Feedback from this prolific player base was cited as a significant factor in the delay decision. But not all the feedback Amazon received was constructive criticism. Some players reported a significant problem afflicting them when they tried to play New World, namely that the game completely bricked their graphics cards. The primary victim of this issue was the Nvidia RTX 3090, a high-end card worth up to $2,000. Having such an expensive graphics card destroyed by New World was understandably distressing for these players.

Now EVGA, the company behind this hardware, has come out with an explanation, courtesy of PCWorld. EVGA reports that the problem was caused by a soldering issue surrounding the affected cards’ MOSFET circuits. The company stressed that this problem, which it blamed on poor workmanship, was a very rare fault, affecting less than 1% of the total number of RTX 3090 cards. EVGA immediately shipped replacement cards to anyone impacted by the problem. PCWorld also noted that the New World beta did not include a frame limiter, meaning that the amount of frames per second could fluctuate wildly, further putting strain on the graphics card. When the problem was first reported, Amazon encouraged players to set a maximum frame rate limit in an effort to prevent New World‘s GPU problem.

Hopefully, by delaying the game, Amazon can address major issues like these. The high player count that turned up for the closed beta period suggests that a lot of people are waiting to try the finished version, and if that enthusiasm is well rewarded, New World could be a considerable success. This would be good news for Amazon, which has historically not fared well in the video game industry. The company’s multiplayer shooter Crucible was a notorious failure leading up to its cancellation in 2020, and in April, Amazon canceled its Lord of the Rings MMO following a contract dispute.

With under a month left until the full release of New World, players won’t have to wait long to see how the MMO turns out. EVGA’s explanation bodes well for the resolution of arguably the most dire problem with the game. Hopefully, when New World releases in September, everyone will be able to try it without putting expensive pieces of machinery at risk.

New World releases on PC on September 28th, 2021.
