The new Valley Girl remake features numerous cameos from the 1983 classic, but Nicolas Cage is not among them. The original Valley Girl is fondly remembered as a classic of its generation, a jolly Romeo and Juliet story about a mall-loving “good girl” (Deborah Foreman) finding love with a rebellious punk rocker, played by Nicolas Cage. The film was a big hit, and Cage quickly became one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, landing roles in Oscar-winning dramas and crowd-pleasing blockbusters alike.

After a string of delays, the long-awaited remake of Valley Girl is finally out now on VOD, written by Amy Talkington and directed by Rachel Lee Goldenberg. Rather than updating the setting to the present day, the new Valley Girl wisely sticks with the 1980s aesthetics defined by the original movie and adapts the story into a jukebox musical featuring some of the biggest songs of the era, from artists like Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Queen, and more.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Recently, Screen Rant got the chance to interview Talkington. Inevitably, the conversation turned to the subject of the film’s numerous cameos from key cast members of the original film, including Foreman herself, who sports a chic side-ponytail in her brief appearance. Unfortunately, one actor from the original film who does not appear in the remake is Nicolas Cage, though the filmmakers did apparently put out feelers to see if he would be interested in a cameo.

When asked about Cage’s involvement, Talkington confirmed there was no role written specifically for the actor. In fact, the roles for Foreman and the other original cast members were not pre-baked into the Valley Girl script, but were written in once the actors signed on. Had Cage been interested, she would have gotten to work on finding the perfect spot to include him.

There was not a role written for him. I think there might have been something of, “Is this something he would be interested in thinking about doing?” But I think he was busy on a movie… If there had been interest, we would have found a role for him for sure! We would have written one. So we certainly would have found a place for Nic Cage if he had been available.

Alas, for one reason or another, Cage was unable to participate. Talkington said he was busy on another movie, which makes sense, as Cage has developed a reputation in Hollywood as a veritable workhorse, taking lead roles in four or more movies every year since 2016. With his absurdly busy schedule, he was probably unable to show up in in Valley Girl, the remake of the movie that made him a star in the first place. However, by not writing a role specifically for Cage, the filmmakers saved themselves the hassle of having to hire another actor to play a part clearly intended for the legendary thespian.

Valley Girl is out now on VOD and select drive-in theaters.
