Pamela Anderson has no interest in even watching the trailer for Pam & Tommy. Depicting the three-year marriage between Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, with a special focus on the theft and illegal distribution of a sex tape featuring the couple, Pam & Tommy premiered on Hulu in February. It stars Lily James and Sebastian Stan in the respective title roles, with a cast that also includes Nick Offerman, Taylor Schilling, and Seth Rogen.

Despite its spotlight on the titular celebrities, producers were able to develop the eight-part limited series without the involvement or permission of Anderson by obtaining the rights to a 2014 Rolling Stone story written by Amanda Chicago Lewis. The article, titled “Pam and Tommy: The Untold Story of the World’s Most Infamous Sex Tape,” delved into the theft of the tape and its aftermath. In past interviews, James has admitted that she hasn’t been able to get in touch with Anderson to discuss Pam & Tommy. New remarks from a source close to Anderson go a long way in explaining why that might be the case.

Speaking with EW, the source stresses that Anderson is focused on her life in Vancouver and her philanthropic efforts, and that she has no plans to watch the Hulu drama. “Not even years from now. Not even the trailer,” the source says, and goes on to explain that it was one thing for Pam & Tommy to be about the sex tape, but entirely another for the show to feature brief clips of it. “Pamela is somehow still the exception to the rule. She’s still up for grabs,” they lament. The full quote is included below:

I do know she’ll never, never watch this. Not even years from now. Not even the trailer. Tommy doesn’t get it. He’s in the same mindset he was at the time: that any publicity is good publicity. As a friend of Pamela, at least no one will ever ask me again if the tape was really stolen.

But imagine if a celebrity today had their nudes leaked and then Hollywood recreated not just the crime but the actual nudes — that would never happen. In the ’90s, Pamela’s body was deemed by a judge to be public property. There was no question the tape was stolen property, but the court decided it wasn’t private property because her body belonged to the world. Pamela is somehow still the exception to the rule. She’s still up for grabs. That’s messed up. Yes, it’s brief clips — but to me the most damning aspect is that [Pam & Tommy] didn’t just tell the story, they recreated moments from the boat.

The source goes on to compliment James for matching Anderson’s look and voice. Still, they had some criticisms for how she was written: “Pamela is not that meek. She is not a shrinking violet and never was.” Anderson’s response is notably different than Lee, who spoke with Stan about Pam & Tommy. It’s certainly understandable that Anderson would feel uninterested in the project. The Hulu series promises, essentially, to center Anderson and the misogyny she experienced, but, in practice, it’s easy to see how the whole endeavor represents something that the Baywatch alum doesn’t wish to revisit.

Beyond that, there’s the general question of what Pam & Tommy hopes to accomplish. James has been, and will likely continue to be, lauded for playing an actress that was diminished and mocked by Hollywood, which is itself strange. And for all of its claims in wanting to tell Anderson’s truth, the limited series leaves out complicated realities and offers up redemption where there shouldn’t be any. It tells viewers that Rand Gauthier, the man who stole the tape, goes on to feel remorse about what he did. In truth, as the Rolling Stone article made clear, Gauthier continued to brag about his theft and even enjoyed watching the tape himself.
