Robert Pattinson’s costume for The Batman has been revealed, and it’s drawing a lot of comparisons to the Marvel hero, Daredevil. Following Ben Affleck’s decision to step away from the role, Robert Pattinson is set to be the latest actor to bring the Caped Crusader to the big screen.

Filming for The Batman started only weeks ago, and now director Matt Reeves has released a test video on Twitter that provides a first look at the next live-action Batman costume and is the first official reveal of any of the characters featured in The Batman. Set to a red tint, the video gives a fan a close look at Pattinson suited up as Batman. For the most part, the video focuses on the new cowl, the bat symbol, and the armor on his chest. Fans have already noted that Robert Pattinson’s Batman looks like the version of the DC Comics superhero that appeared in Rocksteady’s Arkham video game series.

The costume contains similarities to other past Batman suits, but interestingly one of the costumes it bears a striking resemblance to is the one worn by Daredevil, specifically the version of the character that was played by Charlie Cox in Netflix’s Daredevil TV series. Here’s why they look so similar. First of all, a lot of it has to do with the red lighting, camera angles, and the shadows, which is reminiscent of the opening sequence in the Daredevil show. Then there’s the masks, which are quite similar in structure, and perhaps it’s this more than anything that has fans talking about the resemblance to Daredevil. Both Daredevil and Batman wear a mask that only exposes the mouth and chin.

A good bit of the similarity has to do with the way the modern Daredevil himself is designed. As a costumed vigilante in a brightly colored suit, the original Daredevil didn’t have much in common with Batman, both in terms of his personality and appearance, but as the years passed, Daredevil stories became much more mature as they developed a noir-type feel. Netlfix’s Daredevil fully embraced the dark and gritty tone from the Man Without Fear’s later comics, and placed its titular hero in an incredibly violent world. The similarities to Batman are more noticeable than ever in the Netflix show. Charlie Cox’s Daredevil was a grounded and dark hero, thanks in part to his tragic backstory. These are qualities shared by most incarnations of Batman, both in the comics, the games, and the more recent movies.

This iteration of Daredevil also ditched the classic, bright red suit in favor of a much darker costume, thus drawing even stronger comparisons to the Dark Knight. However, there’s a good chance that the similarities will be forgotten in time, as trailers and official images are released in the coming months, which will provide more detailed looks at the Batman suit. Either way, the new test video has given fans a lot to be excited about.
