Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar say they aren’t interested in starring in another film together following 2002’s Scooby Doo, as the pair feel it wouldn’t be interesting. Prinze Jr. and Gellar met in 1997 and married in September 2002. Overall, the beloved Hollywood couple has starred in a total of five feature films together.

Prinze Jr. and Gellar met during the production of slasher horror I Know What You Did Last Summer, where they portrayed young teens Ray Bronson and Helen Shivers. The pair are hunted down by a killer who knows that they and their friends were involved in a hit-and-run incident the year before. Both reprised their roles in the sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, as well as the comedy She’s All That, before beginning dating in 2000. The couple starred in Scooby Doo the same year they were married, and later worked together on the sequel Scooby Doo: Monsters Unleashed. With Prinze Jr. and Gellar each having portrayed iconic roles that their kids now enjoy, the pair have often reflected on their careers, and have now recently revealed their thoughts on working together.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Speaking to US Weekly (via ET Canada), Prinze Jr. revealed that the couple is not interested in working on another film together. The actor explained that he and Gellar only worked on the Scooby Doo movies when they were a couple, and that the experience had them conclude that neither one of them thought the prospect was “interesting.” He elaborated that he didn’t think audiences would be interested in seeing the two portraying a struggle on-screen knowing that they would be “going home together” following the production. Check out Prinze Jr.’s full response below.

“We only worked together while we were together, on ‘Scooby-Doo’, and otherwise neither one of us, I felt, thought it would be very interesting for us to be in a job together … I don’t think it’s that exciting to watch two people struggle to be together when, you know, they’re going home together at the end of the night.”

Though the pair haven’t shared the screen in live-action alongside one another since Scooby Doo: Monsters Unleashed, they have still worked alongside one another in animation. In Star Wars: Rebels season 2, Prinze Jr.’s Jedi knight Kanan Jarrus finds himself the target of the Imperial Inquisitors after leaving Lothal alongside the rest of the crew of the Ghost. Gellar voices the Seventh Sister, who hunts down Kanan and his young apprentice, Ezra Bridger (Taylor Gray), until she is killed by Darth Maul (Sam Witwer) in the finale episode, “Twilight of the Apprentice.”

Both Prinze Jr. and Gellar’s perspective is understandable, with the pair’s long marriage and iconic roles alongside each other, it can be hard to separate the on-screen characters from the real-life couple’s relationship. This is even more obvious in the Scooby Doomovies, as not only were they a couple during production, their characters Fred (Prinze Jr.) and Daphne (Gellar) were also paired up. However, as shown by the brief interactions in Star Wars: Rebels, the pair have plenty of chemistry to play other character dynamics, and it’s a shame to learn that they won’t be working together again.
