Players who boot up Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered on the PS5 might be in for a bit of a shock. Developer Insomniac announced today that in the newer version of Marvel’s Spider-Man, Peter Parker will look a little different.

Marvel’s Spider-Man was originally released in 2018. A spin-off game, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, will be a launch title for the PS5, though Insomniac has cautioned that the game is not a “true sequel.” It will be smaller in scope and focus on Miles’s adventures in Harlem as he takes on a new foe in the form of the Tinkerer. Fans who purchase Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition for the PS5 will get a free code for Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered for the PS5.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In their post on the PlayStation Blog, Insomniac detailed some of the enhancements coming to Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, including ray-tracing and enhanced reflections on mirrored surfaces. But in a stunning move, Insomniac also announced they had completely redone the character model for Peter Parker. This isn’t simply a digital change, but a change in actor as well. Originally, the face model for Peter Parker was John Bubniak. The new face model is now actual model Ben Jordan. Yuri Lowenthal remains Peter Parker’s voice actor, and Insomniac has stated the reason for the change was to find an actor that would provide a better match for Yuri Lowenthal’s facial captures.

PS5’s New Peter Parker Model Has Drawn Mixed Reactions

The internet reaction to the new face of Peter Parker has been somewhat mixed. While it’s undeniable that the graphics quality of the new Peter Parker has improved on the PS5, many dislike the direction the new model takes the character. For one, many have pointed out the new Peter Parker looks decidedly younger than the original version. Marvel’s Spider-Man was notable for featuring a Peter Parker that had already been a superhero for eight years, was 23, and out of college. The newer model looks less like a confident veteran of crime-fighting and is much more fresh-faced. Many are also noting that the new model looks suspiciously similar to Tom Holland, known for playing Peter Parker in the MCU. There is of course speculation that this change was an attempt to bring the two portrayals closer together.

If there’s one silver lining in the new model, it’s that it seems to confirm that Insomniac is committed to the Spider-Man games. It seems unlikely that Insomniac would have invested in completely redoing the character model for a remaster if they didn’t have their eye on the long-term goal of a sequel down the road. Given the success of Marvel’s Spider-Man, a full-length sequel seems inevitable. Its lead character will now just sport a completely different face.
